Motherboard has 8pin and 4pin power connectors

The 8pin is CPU power. I'm a bit unclear on what the 4pin plug is for, but do I have to provide power to it? My PSU only has one CPU power cable.

the 4 pin is for the cpu power, incasase it has one for older models or the newest ones for extreme ocing.

just plug in the 8pin and leave the 4pin hanging there.
