URGENT HELP - CPU came off with heat sink

Hello friends,

I was in the process of removing my AMD stock cooler to switch to a better coller gifter over christmas. I unplugged and removed the motherboard from the case, unfastened the lever keeping the stock cooler in place and then the problems began.

I experienced difficulties removing the heatsink from the CPU and attempted multiple rotating and side-to-side motions to no availe. I decided to take a break to not get angry, had lunch and try it again. This time, it only took 2 or three tries for the heatsink to come off (still with some good resistance).

Sadly and to my horror, The CPU was still on the heatsink and has been ripped out of the still fastened sockt (lever holding the CPU in place was obviously still down). The CPU itself is a little damaged, I counted 6 of the bottom-left most pins (oposite corner from the gold triangle) to be slightly bent. None of the pins are completely severed and I have not proceeded further.

my big question is, what now?
Should I attempt to straighten the pins? How?
and how am i suppose to get the chip off of the heatsink without further damage.

Thank you all for your time,
from a concerned gaming brother

PS. I have imaged the pins from the side but am not sure if i can share an image on this forum.

Solution

Holding it upside down, CPU pins up; apply a few drops of isopropyl alcohol to your "weld". The solvent will help breakdown the thermal paste, freeing it up. Let it soak inbetween the cracks and add more until it gets freed up.

Are the pins bent to the point where they appear they will no longer seat? You may do more harm than good trying to straighten the delicate pins. They may be straight enough to work just fine once in the socket again.

I will try the isopropanol now. (isopropyl alcohol is just a different name)

I do not think the pins will fit anymore. Looking at all the others rows from the side, all the pins are at a nice 90° angle and the first pin hides all the rest.
In the rows with bent pins, you can clearly see the bent ones just poking their heads out; I would say an extra 15-30° from their upright position

Tough call. Won't really be able to tell until it is free from the cooler. You can just place it in and see if it sits nicely, if it sticks up or doesn't slide in, use something plastic to straighten the pins. A credit card would be great, something that won't scratch the PCB or the gold plating.

I have been applying copious amounts of isopropanol to the sides of the chip where i can see the thermal paste sticking out.
I have been drowsing the side with a queu tip and even tied a thin strip of kitchen towel around the edge with some dental floss and just poured the propane-2-ol on it for 10 minutes.... I feel I have made no progress, can't budge it out or even displace it a little to reach deeper under the chip...

Startingto wonder I they didn't give me a sample of pure gravity instead of thermal paste.

I like the fishing line idea, same as you'd use to remove the decals on a car or something. Shit must be really crusty... they could have given you Thermal ADHESIVE... that would be bad...

I'm over here trying to think of a reliable way to heat it up without overheating it but it might be a bad idea haha... man...

I'd try just working the fishing line back and forth, back and forth.

I just used a tiny knife at the end of my corkscrew to physically scrap off the excess paste (blue-ish in color and pretty soft)
It came off easily.

I have also been looking into heating the copper plate (or pipes) of the heatsink o bring some heat into the equation but i'll experiment with that as a last resort and probably only tomorrow

VIIIICTOOOORYYYYYYY.

I have triumphed over the the devilish hyper-grvity-ultr-adhesive paste of doom +15.
For future references, apply copious amounts of antimatter...

But seriously, Isopropanol (isopropyl alcohol or propan-2-ol) all over the sides of the CPU/heatsink interface, after several applications with a queutip, scratch off any excess (preferably with something thin and plastic) which is now pretty soft. After that, keep applying lots of isopropanol and occasionally try to put a bit of lever action (i used scissors but again, anything non-metalic would be preferable)

The paste under the actual chip is quite sparse which makes me thin that it may have been too tight, and pushes a lot of the paste outwards creating a seal around the chip.

next step is straightening the pins and trying to see if I can boot my pc again.

Do you think i can give it a test boot without any cooling solution for the CPU? I don't want to install my brand new all in one cooling system if the chip and/or mobo is dead.

FYI for future thread readers: this same thing happened to me, and I got the CPU and heatsink separated by a) applying arcticlean to the exposed edges of the paste, and b) heating the heatsink up w/ a hair dryer. The combo softened it enough that I could slowly wiggle the CPU back and forth until it came free. CPU worked fine when reinstalled (so far, no jinx.)
