I just upgraded my DirectTV installation to their new HD receivers without DVR. I want to add an external DVR to one of these receivers. The HDMI slot on the receiver is used; the only option is with RCA jacks. Is there any hard drive w/software available? As an alternative, can I record at a manual preset date/time to a hard drive or computer?

You should have opted for DVR receiver, in the first place.

You first have to see what signal is coming out of the RCA jacks. Disconnect the HDMI cable, and connect your TV thru these cables. If you get picture and audio, you can start looking for DVR.

In its heyday, Windows 7 with Windows Media Centre were quite good DIY DVR, and with appropriate hardware (IR blaster), they could even control cable and sat boxes.

These guys made their name synonym for DVR - with program guides, schedules etc. I am not sure it will be cheaper than renting the DVR from DirectTV, though, and you'll be limited to so-so picture and sound quality.

When I upgraded to the oblong dish and new HD receivers, I found out that the new Genie system/DVR works as a master/slave arrangement. In other words, the other 3 units only work off the master unit - they all have to be in the same location.

I will try out the RCA jacks connected to the TV. If that leaves me with an HDMI connection available, what DVR option do I have?
