Hi. I have had a Sound blaster Zx for some time now, and I just bought the Logitech Z906 THX Certified 5.1 surround speakers/sub.

Both the Sound Card and the Sub have two optical ports for Digital Audio.

My old speakers (logitech z506) did not have any optical ports on the sub.

I currently have the sub connected to the sound card with the 3x stereo analogue leads that shipped with the Z906.

So my questions are as follows:

1: Do I need two optical cables to get digital audio, or can I use one?
2: Would I get 5.1 surround with optical, or will I only get Stereo output?
3: Is there a discernible increase in quality using digital over analogue?
4: when playing a blu-ray will my output be DTS instead of PCM? (My sound card supports DTS but I only get 6ch PCM output atm)

Please assist.

Solution
1| One.
2| Read through this.
3| Depends on how high of an audiophile you are. Some can and some can't discern the difference. It also depends on the content you're listening to.
4| Depends on the content you're playing.

Test with both analog and optical setups and see if you're comfortable with either of them.

Thanks for the reply. I went and bought an Optical cable, bowever I only got 5.1 on Dolby digital and DTS movies.

Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio were only outputting in 2.1 Stereo and all my games were outputting in 2.0 (No back channels, center channel or LFE).

So I went back to analogue and I get 5.1 on my whole system (in all programs that supported 5.1).

Now I can make my room shake when playing my games and watching my movies again. :D

Some day, after I get a gtx1080 (With HDMi 2.0 port) and a 120Hz Projector/Retractable Screen. I want to look into a Sound Blaster X7 and some hardcore 5.1 speakers with a massive high wattage sub/receiver for a true home theater experience. But that would take years of saving (or winning the lottery).
