I have just purchased a GTX 1070 which requires a 8 pin power supply. My previous graphics card required 2x6 pin. Is it safe to use a 2x6 pin to 8 pin adapter to power the GTX 1070, or do I need to get a new PCU?

Hi,
I have a ace ATX power supply. I dont think it has a 6+2 pin cable. As I said, the old power supply was powered by two 6 pin cables. Is my PCU not compatible?
(sorry for being a bit stupid with these questions, new to building computers)
thanks

Honestly, while adapters are an option (could even do molex to 8pin) I'd just get a new PSU. Ace is a very poor brand, and I wouldn't trust one of my computers with one. Look for a Seasonic PSU or a brand that uses their parts, like EVGA or Corsair.

It'll come with the correct 2+6 connectors and you'll have a solid PSU.

Molex to 8 pin power adapters are a terrible idea - You're essentially squeezing 3x the amperage through a single line. You'll be without a GPU or worse if there are any hiccups.

That being said, If the PSU doesn't come with 6+2 or 8 pin connectors, don't try to modify or buy "adapters" to make it have them. Buy a PSU with those connectors already there - There are many affordable options much better then screwing up an entire build by a poor decision.

If the connections aren't there, then the PSU likely won't handle having them there, or it wasn't designed to.

Edit: (Could be like this guy 2 years ago and have his wires melt by using adapters http://i.imgur.com/SxU5Y8e.jpg )

Didn't say it was a great option. :p Many people have successfully used adapters, I personally wouldn't. You can split it over 2 lines though, it's 2x molex to the 8 pin.

I really doubt his current PSU could even handle a 1070 in the first place, given that the reviews I've seen of Ace PSUs show them struggling to output more than half their rated wattage.
