CPU Overheating Issues

Hey guys, I just finished my first PC build and I am having some issues with my CPU overheating. I've tried everything I can think of to solve this issue and nothing is working. Even just running the bios will bring the temp up to around 70°C. If I boot up and try to run a game or do a performance test it will jump into the high 80°C range.

Here is my build:

Motherboard - MSI Z170A Gaming M7
CPU - Intel i7 6700K
Video Card - EVGA Geforce GTX 1070
RAM - Corsair 16GB (2 x 8GB)
Fans - Six 120mm fans
1TB SSD

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Have you checked that the cooler is tightened down evenly all around and in full contact with the CPU? The heat sink fan is running, and blowing in the correct direction (toward/over/through the heat sink? And also toward the exhaust, which would usually be in the back of the case.) If all of that seems okay, have you removed the cooler, cleaned off and reapplied the thermal paste, and reinstalled?

Also, what's your case and power supply, where are your other fans installed, and in what direction is each of them blowing (inward/intake, or outward/exhaust)?

CPU fan is blowing through the heat sink toward the back. I have also taken off the heat sink, cleaned, and reaplied the thermal paste. All seems good there. I have two fans in the lower front blowing inward, two fans at the top blowing down into the case, and one in the upper back blowing outward. Also, it runs these temps with the side cover on and off.

Case - Thermaltake Vera N24 Black ATX Mid Tower Gaming Computer Case with Power Supply Cover
Power Supply - Corsair CX 600M

Bad. Your two top fans should be blowing heat upwards, Out of your case. Not inwards.

Front - IN
Side - IN
Back - OUT
TOP - OUT

Heat rises, by you having your fans blow the heat downwards you're trapping a bunch of heat around your CPU, change the fans the other direction.

You'll probably have a 10 degree difference by just doing that.

Tumeden is correct. If reversing those fans doesn't help, some other possible causes or contributors could be: the cooler fan spinning too slowly--have you checked your fan settings and RPMs? Poor-quality thermal paste (or too much or too little of it, or applied incorrectly, or excess got onto the motherboard somewhere it shouldn't be;) defective heat sink or mounting bracket/pins; a faulty temperature sensor reporting your temps incorrectly; or possibly even a problem with your PSU, though that seems unlikely.

Also, do you know whether all your components have up-to-date firmware? And did you check that all your power cables are firmly plugged in at both ends?

Should probably have asked at the start, are you overclocking, or have you changed any settings in the BIOS related to frequency, voltage, etc?

I don't think its an issue with the fan directions because I get similar temps with the tower laying on its side, with the top side off. I have also tried running it with all fans at full output but it didn't make a difference. I have tried two different thermal pastes, using about a pea size amount in the middle each time. When I first booted it up I had a 500W PSU but shortly after put this new one in.

It could be a faulty temp sensor but I don't know how to check that. All of my plugs seem to be in firmly as well. The Firmware is all up to date as far as I can tell. I have not done any overclocking yet but would like to try it if I can get this overtemp issue resolved. I have also tried to play with the frequency and voltage settings to see if it would help with this issue but nothing I tried worked so I reset my bios to its default settings.

Check your thermal paste, and fix your fan directions.

Flipped the top two fans and plugged another one into a CP port instead of Sys port and everything is good. Thanks!
