I think my main pci express slot is shorting out, but could use conformation.

I call her Kristine

Specs
Asus M5A97LE R2.0
AMD Phenom II X4 965
8gb Corsair Vengeance ddr 3
Corsair GS 600
Sapphire hd 7850/7950 OC (have had the same issue with both GPUs)
Asus Silent Knight

Well the problem first began three years ago when the pc was first built, It would run fine for hours, and then all of a sudden, It would lose all signal to the monitor, and have to reboot. Well, my cousin who built the pc, ended up not fixing it, and it sat in a closet for the better part of three years, until I acquired it.
The first month I had it, I changed GPUs to my hd 7950 OC, and it would only show it's problems every once in a while, so it was no big deal....until the night before Christmas. Anyway, I was surfing the web, and out of nowhere, I lost signal, and a fan spooled up to it's maximum rpm (Turned out to be the GPU fan), so I shut it down, and attempted to reboot...the first attempt, it looked as if it was gonna boot fine, then right after the welcome to windows, it lost signal again....third attempt, the GPU fan went crazy again.
So I decided to pull the ram, and re-seat it....and it booted just fine. I decided to run memtest86, and it ran the whole test with no errors. So I thought everything was good to go, and then later that night....back to square one...same issues as before.
Next, I pulled the cmos battery for a half an hour, reinstalled it, set my bios settings to optimized defaults, and again it booted fine, and ran for three hours, then it happened again, and could not boot.
So I decided to reinstall the hd 7850, and it ran great for 3 days, and then today windows started rebooting every few minutes.
So I installed the hd 7850 in the lower pci express slot, just to see what would happen, and again my pc is running great, for about 6 hours straight now, the thing that sucks about this whole situation, is that my hd 7950 will not fit in the lower slot, because it will not clear the hard drive cage.
I have been keeping a close eye on my temps, using CUPID hw monitor, I don't know where to go from here, other then just buying a new mobo.

Could this be a short in the pci express slot?

Well it's more then 24 hours later, and my pc is still running with no issue. I am gonna run her over night, and if it still runs with no issue, I will report back.
It's really too bad nobody has giving me their 2 cents, or even looked at this thread.
