Are the GTX 1080 or RX 480 compatible with my setup?

I looked up some things and the RX 480 can be compatible if I flash my BIOS to latest version apparently but I'm not sure about the GTX 1080. I'd prefer to get the 1080 but am not sure.

I'd prefer just to get a GPU upgrade for now cause I'm on a tight budget but eventually I will build a new rig. Just for now I'd like to see if I can beef up my GPU.

Either is perfectly fine with your setup. You didn't mention what monitor you have. Let's assume 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. You wouldn't get the full potential of the GTX 1080 for sure, by 10-20%, but you'd still be well beyond the point of reason at that resolution anyway. If you have a 2560x1440 or 3840x2160 resolution monitor, then the bottleneck of the aging system becomes even less.

As you can see by my sig, I have paired the maxwell GTX Titan X with the aging 2600K. Whether or not a bottleneck exists, whether or not I get the full performance of the card varies from one game to the next, but the really important part to me is that my minimum performance is well above the threshold of what I think is acceptable.

I'd pick up a GTX 1080 and consider upgrading to Windows 10 at some point.
