I wanted to use an old hard drive as extra storage so I connected it to my PC by an external enclosure.

When I booted up my PC I got a message saying "Preparing Device" and it was loading for a bit. When it finished and it got to the desktop everything was different. I then realized it was using the desktop of the external hard drive.

Is there a way to make the hard drive a basic storage device?

Hi there cuttinace,

Perhaps your system booted from the external drive.

You just need to boot your system without the external HDD attached, access it, back up all the data that you need and reformat it.
Alternatively, you can go to BIOS, remove the external drive from the boot order, and your system should not boot from it.
