I just built a new system, and noticed that there's a very audible and constant hissing in the background of my sound. I used a pair of headphones to connect directly to the mobo onboard jack and the same hissing is there.
Don't know much about audio, but I was reading that the hissing is usually from interference inside the system. Should I get a separate sound card or is that still risking the possibility of this hissing?
Also should mention that the bose companion 5 are USB connected speaker system.
Thanks much

Solution
it is from an unshielded connection somewhere. Check your ground on the PC and Monitor. Double check the internal connections as well.

Sorry, what does an unshielded connection mean? Not quite sure what I should be looking for

the ground part of your power cord acts as a shield, it keeps stray electricity away from the rest of the system. (OK electricians, go ahead and flame me here, just keeping it simple)

improperly grounded devices "hum" in audio equipment as well. Grounded/shielded equipment prevents this.

If you are getting a hiss./hum from both the speakers and any other plugged in device there is something wrong w/ the system. It may be the sound card component. I'm not sure if a USB or PCIe Sound card would be any better. the USB ones are cheap enough:
