Hello guys.. currently i have version 16.7.2 AMD driver... and I'm playing metal gear solid V.. this game was released before my current driver.. so i was wondering will it make a difference if i update my driver to the latest? even though my current driver is already newer than the game I'm playing.. and I'm saving the update step when I'm going to play newer games, like watch dogs 2.

Mostly it's the newer GPUs that get the biggest improvement through updates. Because your HD 7870 is now a few generations old...
If your computer is working fine then don't mess with the drivers. Since you are playing a particular game and know that the drivers you are using came out after the game, then that means those drivers would have incorporated any fixes needed for that game. If you try to play a new game, like Watch Dogs, and you have problems, that's when you look into getting new drivers.

It's not all about the age of the games you're playing, driver updates have many different aspects to them. If you're using an RX480 for example, that GPU has seen huge improvements across all games, even the older ones, through recent driver updates.

You don't really need to update each and every time a new driver is released, but you also don't want to be using really old drivers either. Maybe every few months you should update.

thank you guys for responding.. I'm using Sapphire HD 7870 XT, Tweaked High-ultra settings when gaming Metal gear solid V giving me constant 60FPS. i can't say that I'm complaining with the performance of my GPU on that particular game but i feel it could be better than that, like when i set shadows from high to ultra i get frame drops and its annoying.. so i just thought that if i update my driver i won't be getting frame drops and i'll be able to max out the graphic settings even more.

Your GPU is a couple of generations old. There will be no specific driver tweaks for that generation of card in any of the latest driver versions.. If you have a stable system then do as pete_101 suggests and perhaps update every couple of driver iterations or when you install the latest game....however be aware that your not going to see massive frame rates on that gen. card in 2016/2017 game titles.

thank you.. but pete_101 said that some GPU's has seen improvements across all games, even older ones through recent driver updates. does that means newer GPU's gen only? or even my older gen GPU?

Mostly it's the newer GPUs that get the biggest improvement through updates. Because your HD 7870 is now a few generations old, any updates for it will only be focused on issues that it may have with modern games. There could be something that modern games bring up that would also help in general performance, but any such improvements would be very minimal.
