Hi,

I'm not sure which graphics card I should buy for my first ever gaming PC.

Some specs if it's helpful:
Intel Core i5 7600K Quad Core
Professionally overclocked to 4.8GHz
Asus Prime Z270-P, Intel Z270 Chipset
8GB Corsair Vengeance DDR4 3000MHz (I will be upgrading this to 16GB)

My choices are either the 6gb nvidia gtx 1060 or the 8gb amd rx480; I would ideally like to keep the graphics card for at least 4 years and would prefer the quieter/cooler option.

This question comes up almost daily.

The 1060 performs a little better in DX11 titles, with the RX480 taking the lead in DX12 by a small margin*
*Today. Driver updates close/widen the gap all the time.

The 1060 has a bit more OCing headroom (I think typically you can OC 10-15%) whereas an RX480 doesn't have much at all (maybe 5%, generally).

You can't really go wrong with either.

As for the quieter/cooler, it'll depend on the specific model (vendor/brand/product line) and is not as simple as "1060 vs 480"

Which one would you choose if you had to?

My needs likely differ from yours. I was comparing the 3GB 1060 and 4GB 480's up until I purchased the 1060 a week or so ago.

I would honestly pick the cheaper of the two; provided it has an appropriate cooling solution and fit mu build aesthetically.

Are you comparing two specific GPUs (1x 1060 and 1x480) in particular? Or just overall?

They are the exact same price on the website I'm looking at right now; I was looking at an overall comparison but the two in particular are:

6GB EVGA GTX 1060 GAMING, 1506MHz GPU, 1280 Cores, 8008MHz GDDR5 - GeForce GTX VR Ready

8GB XFX Radeon RX 480 DD GTR XXX, 1288MHz GPU, 2304 Streams, 8000MHz GDDR5 - Radeon VR Ready

Thank you, I'll have a read of that.
