What you *should* do once you have your OS installed and the drivers configured is image your drive and save that image on something like a USB drive. With compression, a 16GB drive is probably sufficient so this is like $5. At this point you can simply go back to a fresh install anytime you like by restoring that image. Beyond that, you *should* have regular backups (I do every 2 hours) so that going back to the day-1 image doesn't lose you any of the files.
Storing files on your HDD isn't exactly useful when you want to reinstall since it generally formats the drive...
I don't quite understand the applicability here ... he has a functional windows installation, just missing ethernet drivers.
Option 1 - Copy from Download\Drivers directory
Option 2 - Take out the MoBo CD
Tho not the topic at hand, a clean windows install as a cinch w/ proper planning
C:\ - OS Drivers and Utilities
D:\ - Whatever and however many partitions you like.
X:\ - Image of C:\
Format C:\ and all your drivers, programs and data are all still sitting there safe and sound.
or
SSD:
C:\ - OS / Drivers / Utilities
Hard Drive
C:\ - backup OS / Drivers / Utilities
D:\ - Whatever and however many partitions you like.
X:\ - Image of C:\
If SSD goes south or OS is fudged, you are back up and running in the time it takes to reboot, but selecting the HD in the Boot Order. Then you can restore the image at your leisure.
