Damaged USB3.0 stick acting like 2.0?

I've been using a Kingston Hyper X 64gb USB stick for a couple years now and I accidently bent it slightly while cleaning :pfff: and it somehow downgraded itself to 2.0 speeds... It still works, but instead of my usual 250-ish speed, I'm now at a low 45 mbps....

The port is fine since I tried it on two other computers' 3.0 ports and all three of them give the same "This device can perform faster if connected to a USB 3.0 port..." message, as if it's still being recognized as a 3.0, but performs as 2.0.

Is there anything I can do myself to maybe fix it? Why exactly would it do something like downgrade itself to 2.0 speeds as opposed to just stop working all together?

Thanks for any info.

Solution
the connector, the usb connector, can you see inside it? there should be a row of 4 contacts but behind it, another row of contacts

in the second row see if some contacts are bent, or there is a strange object in there

if the connection with the second row of pins can't be establised, the device defaultos to usb 2.0, the 4 first pins

Cool, thanks for the picture! I see how it works now. I'll take a better look when I'm home from work shortly.

It bent downwards (using the picture's orientation) so maybe that top row of contacts isn't touching anymore as they were pulled back inside the slots (assuming they are attached to the board unlike the bottom row). Maybe I'll remove the plastic casing for a better look, and attempt to gently bend it back so they come forward a bit.

I hope that's the problem and not a broken pin :(

So, upon closer inspection, the pins are there and at least don't look broken in any way, although maybe a little flatter than the ones in you picture, so I'm guessing they got flattened down and don't touch properly.

I actually inserted it with a bit of pressure downwards, and the message didn't pop up this time, although I only reached about 160mbps in a quick benchmark...

I guess I'll try and be gentle and bend them back up a little bit, following your advice not to touch them together. If that doesn't work, at least I can use it as 2.0 -.-

Thanks again! That picture helped.
