Greetings,

I do have an external hard drive, bought in august 2013.
Model: WD My Passport 3.0, 1TB, 2.5"
4 days ago, I had in my mind to delete some data from it as it was ~95% full.
It suddenly stopped working, after connecting it via a usb port, read all folder structures in Windows Explorer of a Win7 OS but had no chance to apply any copy action on it.

Simptoms:
- I can see it in my computer, it does have a drive letter but no information underneath (like 50Gb of 978Gb Free)
- it is visible in device manager and it says "this drive it is working properly"
- after the bellow actions were taken on it, I've opened the plastic box to examine the sounds which are some repeating "ticking" sounds and after a while it stops "ticking" (it is not really a ticking sound, it is more... can't really describe it)

Actions taken:
- uninstalled the driver from device manager and re-installed it after reboot (before reboot I have removed the hdd from the usb port), no success
- can not be anymore removed safely, it just stops responding
- on a Linux Ubuntu machine could not be mounted succesfully
- on a Win10 laptop it showed up once, saw all the folders on it, opened succesfully a smaller folder but when tried to copy the files down to laptop, it just stopped responding

Actions not taken yet:
- did not tried it with a different usb cable (same model)

What can be the problem? Is the spindle stucked? Or it has bad head(s)?
What can be done?

After all actions taken above, on the next day I took it to a service. On their website it says the diagnosis is free and they have it ready in 24 hours. Now already passed more than 48 hours. Contacted them via phone and I got the answer that they don't have an answer.

I am starting to really worry about this and thinking the company service is at an amateur level or they are trying to delay as much as possible and then ask a huge price for the recovery action. I don't like it not getting even an estimation date or more communication like they are scanning it or examining physical part or whatever.

I would like to consider the community advices.

Thank you very much!

It is not uncommon for these drives to have issues. I get several of them a day for data recovery. In most cases, we are able to tweak the firmware and work around the bad sectors to recover the data without changing the heads. I'd say that only 15-20% need head replacement in order to recover the data. As it is the 1TB model, it is should cost well under $1000USD at a reputable lab.

Although most of the WD passports are USB only interface and encrypted in the background, the encryption shouldn't be an issue. That is, although it takes less than 5 minutes to save the ROM and program a SATA PCB and an extra few seconds to click on a box to tell our tools to work with the encryption, the remainder of the recovery procedure is...
Hey there.

Sorry to hear about the troubles you're going through with your HDD.

It really sounds like there's some sort of a mechanical issues, since there's an unusual ticking sounds coming from the drive, along with all the other problem's you've been experiencing.
Just a piece of friendly advice for next time, try the drive with a different computer and USB cable first. Also (I know it does not apply in this case) taking the drive out of its original enclosure always voids its warranty.
Hopefully the guys at the service center are able to do something about your data, but if that doesn't prove to be the case, you could always go for a data recovery company if your data is really valuable and irreplaceable: WD Data Recovery Partners.

Hope that helps. Good luck!

Be cautious of a lab that charges extra fees for these non-issues.

Good luck

Thank you both of you the precious answers. I appreciate them a lot!

We do have, finally, a status of the diagnose process. They said: "large faulty surface sectors". Gave them my approoval to finish completely the diagnosis...

Great! That means that the heads are good and the cost should be well under $500USD, right?
