I just purchased the gigabyte g1 gtx 1070 for 400. However a relative has offered me a r9 290x for 150. I want to play at 1440p at ultra settings. Which option should i go for?

It depends on the games you play as the R9-290X starts closing the gap in modern DX12/Vulkan titles (read about ASync Compute AMD).

I like THIS benchmark instead as it AVERAGES a lot of games: https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_1070/24.html

GTX1070 is almost 50% faster.

*The R9-290X is still a great card and you'll have a great experience at 1440p though may have to drop settings in some titles so it's hard to recommend one or the other cards.

Those are the facts.

I recently had a GTX680 and ran a mixture of 1440p/1080p resolution in games and the R9-290X is 2x as fast in some titles.

update:
You said "ULTRA" so just FYI you can't play all games at Ultra, 1440p, 60FPS even with a GTX1080 (and good CPU etc).

So you'll still need to tweak some games. (do NOT just crank to Ultra and accept whatever resolution you get. Set an FPS goal. Maybe force "Adaptive VSYNC" for a game "NCP-> manage 3D settings-> add game..."

Then tweak settings so you drop below 60FPS maybe 5% of the time. That's a great balance of visuals whilst avoiding screen tear. If you use VSYNC OFF then aim for at least 40FPS average.

It sounds like you should keep the GTX1070 though since you want the highest quality.
