Just got a new i7 6800k, but the cpu temps are all over the place. Overall CPU temps are at 26 Degrees C, and cores 1,2,4,5 and 6 are all under 30 degrees. Yet core #3 keeps going up to 90+. Changed thermal compound, re done the heat sink loads yet no change. Anyone got any idea whats up?

Solution

If the temperature for one core only changes when you add a different cooler then the ONLY thing that I can see is that there's a defect on the mounting part that prevents thermal conductivity.

That should be fairly obvious though because small defects are filled in with the thermal paste.

I might have suggested changing the paste but you already did that so it's not the paste being improperly spread.

It may also be that the sensor failed at...

its the asus strix x99, i just find it strange because it doesnt feel hot or crash, but the temps where lower or more stable when i had it strapped down with cable ties, then i add an actual water cooler and one of the cores shoots up to 100 degrees. Bios says overall temps are 23 degrees

It may also be that the sensor failed at the same time. Weird.

*Lack of crashing or errors still suggests to me that it's a bad sensor. I just don't think it could be overheating.
