Welcome to Tom's Hardware, @KG_01!

This sounds pretty unfortunate. :( If you have unplugged the external HDD while it was still active (reading/writing) on your Mac, you could have damaged its file system or even worse - its hardware. My recommendation is to check how the HDD will get recognized if you use a different USB cable and try it on another Mac computer. I'd also suggest you go to Disk Utility on your Mac and test the external hard drive for defects from there.

If nothing helps, you could try using third-party data recovery tools at your own risk. But since we cannot determine the exact damage, I believe a professional data recovery company would be your best bet on getting any of the files from the external HDD back.

Hope this helps you, though. Good luck!

Thanks for your fast response @SuperSoph_WD. I need a specific USB cable connection so I might have to buy another one. I did try to open up my HDD to 2 other computers (one Mac and a Windows HP) and the same issue happens.

What third-party data recovery tools would you recommend? Maybe I can try to take it to the Geek Squad in Best Buy.

Thanks @SuperSoph_WD

Hello again, @KG_01!

Unfortunately, I cannot give you specific third-party data recovery tool recommendations as I am an official representative of a different HDD manufacturer here. However, you should definitely get in touch with your HDD manufacturer and ask them for a data recovery company referral. The professional help is your best bet on getting any of the files back. If the issue is present on multiple computers, then it's never a good sign for the HDD's health.

Yet again, once you get a chance to get the replacement USB cable, you should definitely update me how the external is recognized then.
Taking to a professional PC repair service is also a good idea, just make sure you tell them that you have important data stored on it.

Hope this helps. Keep me posted.
