First : sorry for the bad english. French are not well known for their good talents on foreign languages !

My question ? I have a pretty middle rig right now. It used to be good with all games running on ULTRA@1080 about 1 and half years ago but now i'm struggling to get 60 FPS on new games.

It run OK on Gears of War 4 which is pretty well optimized. But I love playing at Battlefield 1 and I have to settle down some graphics (shadows etc...) to medium. Even with that, on some maps with 64 players I get 30-40 FPS drops. Not dramatic ! But frustrating to get down graphics and FPS drops that ruins a little the experience. Also on THE DIVISION (last patch 1.5) I can't put the graphic at MAX, AND it's lagging on some parts of the game... The witcher 3 is pretty OK but 2 ou 3 options are at medium or something like that. To finish : Deus EX MD lag like hell even not at the max settings (also bad optimisation i guess... but still unplayable)

In short : I wanted to submit my rig to you. I would like to change some stuff but not sure on what exactly even if I have some guess :

  • processor : intel core i5 2500K at 3,3 ghz
OS : Windows 10 last updates on a small SSD. Games are on classic HDD
    Memory : 8 GB
Screen : on a gigantic projector, insane in battlefield 1 (or movies) I recommend it ! BENQ W1070 at 1080p, dont want a resolution higher (or lower!) don't care about 4K
Graphic Card : Nvidia GTX 970 4 GO (MSI I think)
mother board : ASUSTEK P8P67 Sandy Bridge

So what do you think ? Don't want to put a lot of money so here are my guess :

  • - maybe get a last gen i7 ? or a new i5 is just fine ? I think that battlefield 1 for example ask a lot a of processor performance for example
    - RAM seems OK to me because when I (very rarely) check the occupied RAM, it's never full even on BF1
    - I guess I can make a big difference with a new graphic card but I also red that the new 1060 cards are pretty much like the old 970/980 GTX (not sure though, I didn't red all the news/benchs about it)
Note that i prefer to stay in all case with an Nvidia card, dont want to reinstall all my system :)

So should I change just the processor or just the graphic card ? I prefer not both :-(
Note : i dont want to overclock, tweaks or stuff like that. Just want a clean, no brain PC that run games smoothly or almost :)

Thanks you, i'm open to your suggestions !

At least on Bf1 your biggest problem is your cpu. The min requirements is a 6600K. You didnt mention your Ram speed but anyway 8Gb are also a bit on the limit.
My advice would be a new Cpu. A 6600K or 6700K. That means you will need a new Z170 Mb. And if you have DDR2 Ram, you will need DDR3 Ram.
And what PSU do you have?

Thank you for your response ! So in order :
- I'm okay to change the CPU but did not plan the motherboard ! Yeah I'm a bit lazy and don't want to put so much money for pretty much 1 game at the moment. Would it be okay to change the CPU in the limits of the supported CPU of my MB ? Well I check the compatibility list here : https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P8P67/HelpDesk_CPU/ Apparently I can (only) go up to i5/i7 3770K/S/T Would it make a difference of is it ridiculous ? I guess it is...
- about the RAM : it's DDR3 according to what CPU-Z is telling me so I guess I could keep it a little more since 8GB seems fine AND it 4*2GO (I would have to change the 4 RAM to get 2*8GO or something else)
- PSU : I just check it's a Cooler Master GX 650 Watts. Is it enough or no ?

To finish is my GTX 970 enough ? Is it for the moment bottlenecked ? Should I go for an i5 or a i7 ?

Thank you ! Let me know your suggestions, I may go for some sales to buy a new CPU and MB since in France the sales at starting in a few days. If you have suggestions don't hesitate !

PS : here is a link with a photo of my CPU FAN, do you think that I could keep it with the new processor ? Hard to see on the photo but it's pretty big : https://dl2.pushbulletusercontent.com/p2yEwAvbMccyeB6DhYXQE84IN6r02I1H/20170107_142943.jpg

Your CPU cooler is very good btw model is Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO

With that mb a new processor wouldnt be a huge upgrade.. I would buy an i7 6700k with a z170 mb. After that I would buy a new psu. That wattage is enough. That psu is just not very good quality. I would want a good psy to protect my investiment.. only after that would I buy a new gpu. Yours is still very good for 1080p. And maybe 8Gb more of ram.
Btw your evo 212 is still good.

Thank you for your suggestion.

I never overclocked in my life. What shoud I do first ? Here are my thought :
- launch a benchmark before any modification to have "score base"
- in the bios on in windows change the ... what ? voltage ?
- try to get a 4GHZ stable ? should be enough ?
- launch again the benchmark to get the improvment. Check the temperature to see if it's not going not more that... 60° i guess ?

Thank you in advance, I'm up to do that !
