So i got a GA Z170x ultra gaming from a friend. The problem is it worth getting i7 7700k over i7 6700k

I7 7700k cost about 30€ more, in my country and this will be a new upgrade from my old fx 8350,

I game a lot but i also use photoshop and sony vegas..if i would want to record i will do it with mine old fx.
Fan for the cpu will probably be noctua nh d14. So oc will probably be when stock speed wont be enough. The reason im asking for i7 7700k is that new mobos z270x are out and i wonder if kaby lake will do 100% from it on z170x mobo

I bought the 7700k for my Asus z170. Asus released an Intel 7 series compatible bios back in September to my surprise. However I cannot overclock it like my old 6 series CPU with this board. I guess I have to wait for another bios patch. I think your better off getting 6700k since the performance gains were so minimal. Recently I saw benchmarks that show the 6700k actually performed better but they overclocked it to match the clock rate of the 7700k. Hope this helps.

Z170 boards will require a BIOS update to accept a Kaby Lake CPU. So make sure that if the BIOS is updated to support the CPU otherwise how'll you use 7700K? If you manage to install it in a Z170 motherboard then it'll definitely perform to its fullest, why wouldn't it? But with a Z270 chipset you can get benefits of a newer platform.

For the difference part, Kaby Lake increases 5-10% Clock-to-Clock performance over Skylake. Intel CPU since 2nd Generation are going like this. 5-10% IPC (Instructions Per Clock) increase over previous generation.

Like others have said many z170 chipsets now support the new Kabylake parts but aside from more overclocking headroom (5.0ghz or so on average for the 7700k versus 4.6-ish for the 6700k) there isn't much of a difference between the two.

Even now bios support for Kabylake on z170 chipsets is spotty at best.

Specifically as to IPC improvements on Kabylake versus Skylake... There aren't any. It's essentially the same chip made to a slightly higher standard than the 6700k (hence the higher stock and stable overclock speeds) and with slightly better integrated graphics.

I had to make the same choice as you do between buying a new motherboard and upgrading to a 7700k from a 6600k or keeping the old z170 and instead opting to buy just the 6700k thus saving a total of about $150. I went with keeping the z170 as well as my $150 and don't regret a thing.

Best of luck to you.
