Does the Mother Board need an upgrade.

Hey all, I have gotten a bit confused when it comes to mother boards when doing my first build. I understand the basics but have just recently purchased a G1 Gaming GTX 1070 and am concerned that my current cheap motherboard will damage it. the Mother Board is a GA 78lmt, will this damage the new card?

Solution
Shouldn't. PCIe has been standardized for many years. Unless there is something wrong with the board, in which case you would already be seeing problems.

Damage it, no not a chance in the world.

However that is a low end AMD board that can't handle AMD's fastest processors, whatever you are going to run on that board is going to bottleneck the 1070.

You may want to reconsider your GTX 1070 and drop it to a 1060 or even 1050ti, or reconsider your motherboard and CPU.

well I already have the card so I will probably just upgrade the MOBO to match.

You would want to upgrade the motherboard and processor. I wouldn't use a 1070 with anything less than an Intel i5-6500

Ok Your pairing of an FX-8350 with a GA-78LMT which is 760G based, is a poor choice. And if you just bought it I would recommend returning it.

The 1070 will function on it yes, but the 8350 has a hard time keeping up with a 1070, on top of that the cheap motherboard really can't handle the 8350. It may function yes but as it gets pushed by games its going to start failing on you because it has a very weak VRM setup.

You really need to at a minimum replace that motherboard with a MSI 970 Gaming for example, or a Gigabyte GA970 UD3P. At best return it and the 8350 and buy an i5-6500 and any motherboard for it.

Alright, thanks for the help, any value in waiting for Zen in your opinion, nothing against Intel, just more familiar with AMD, also the only reason that I have that MOBO is due to the fact that it was a jumping off point from a cheap prebuilt, I had every Intention to switch it out eventually.

Yeah ill probably do that, the only reason I even have this set up is because I already had a cheap Ibuypower that I used as my jumping off point and have sort of just phased crappy parts out over time, all that's left is the cheap mobo and the case it came in.

Much better choice yes, because you can overclock with it, but even if you don't it can properly handle the CPU.

That said, I would not spend more money on an FX platform, its $100 or whatever you will never see again. Better to cut your losses and upgrade.
