So, just bought an Intel-core i5 3470 along with a Dell Vostro 460 XPS 8300 Series motherboard...the fan won't fit. It's an Intel stock cooler...is there anyway I can get round this?

And, yes, the motherboard definitely has an LGA1155 socket.

Yeah, the motherboard is a standard LGA1155 ATX, that's not the problem; the default fan by Intel won't go in. It seems to have a custom back plate hugging the back of the CPU's socket, which prevents the white plastic pins from entering the holes which they're meant to clip into. I removed the back plate, which unfortunately means the metal CPU holder above the socket detaches; so I can't keep the CPU in place. The only solution I can think of is either buy a new motherboard/cooler, or remove the custom back plate and weld the edges that are stopping the white pins, leaving the screw fittings so as to keep the front panel on.

Any aftermarket cooler is going to come with a backplate - i'd just get a cheap aftermarket cooler like a CM 212
