Seagate USB HDD Not recognized WIN 10- advice

It appears my 3TB Segate Expansion Plus USB drive is not being recognized by Windows 10 File Explorer. I've done all the things that people have tried.

1) It is recognized by Device Manager ( no exclamation or anything). Updating the driver says current driver is fine. Can't seem to locate a driver ( if there is one) at Seagate site.

2) I am able to see the Partition ( using the Disk management) as a drive letter. I am only allow to change the drive letter, which I did to see if it would be recognized.

3) Did uninstall/reinstall USB drivers

4) Did turn off Fast Startup

5) Did tried different USB ports. I have a Seagate Backup Plus and it was able to mapped a drive fine - so USB ports are fine.

6) One anomaly I could not figure out was plugging the drive in and rebooting would disrupt my mouse/keyboard operation (wireless microsoft). I assume there is a usb driver conflict causing some instability.

So what else could I possibly try ? I am going to remove the enclosure and hook it up internally next to see if I can transfer the files to another HD.

Do you think the HDD is bad by now? I believe it is only 3.5years old.
Are there any recommended software for the transfer (if i can get it to map)?

- thx

Sorry to hear that!.. a Partition/Data Recovery software may help you get some of your movies back.. at least it's worth a try. Best known partition manager software have a Partition recovery function and limited data recovery.

Disk Genius has worked for me in the past...
It is possible the HDD is going bad... Hard Disk sentinel should give you a +/- accurate idea.

Hooking the drive internally is a good idea... once there, see what info HD Sentinel comes up with. It's condition should depend on the number of bad sectors and if the bad sector report is in red backgound, and the Performance and Healts percentages are less than optimal. A chkdsk scan may fix/reallocate the information on some of the possible bad sectors.

I've never seen a bad HDD disrupt mouse and keyboard recognition... so who knows if it's related but when I've seen that happen it was either the motherboard or the PSU... Start with HD Sentinel to know the HDD condition, and follow with the diskcheck from the command prompt with Administrator privileges. Type CMD in the Cortana search bar, Select CMD with right click > Run as Administrator > and type: CHKDSK X: /R (where X is the assigned drive letter to the HDD)

Same issue when I removed the enclosure and hooked it up directly. Looks like this disk has gone corrupted. I ran some utilities (used Recuva) but it still needs a drive to scan. I did a check disk but unfortunately I can not run as it looks for a properly mapped drive. Logs show error 441 and that indicates a partition failure of some sort I imagined. There is no firmware update on the Seagate website ( ran the serial number check) . If the disk is seen on the device manager, is there a utility that can scan without relying on a mounted drive letter?

Didn't you say you could assign a drive letter to it? if you can but Windows Explorer doesn't see it, command prompt should see anyway and you should be able to run a chkdsk on it. I't try to find a sure method to do this if a drive letter doesn't stay assigned or is impossible to assign.

That was quick..

Chicano, thanks for that nice information. I did a MOUNTVOL before and after plugging in the HDD and the mount points are the same. So I assume the usb Drive is not mounting at all. The GUID below would show up ?

Possible values for VolumeName along with current mount points are:

Thanks for the help... to make a long story short - we were able to re-initialize the HDD and eventually lost everything. The disk is physically out of commision.
It was 3TB of my movies. I'm surprise the disk went bad so quickly...it was 3.5 years and I thought seagate was reputable...oh well.

For your remaining or new drives I'd advice installing Hard Disk Sentinel and set to Startup with Windows... as long as HDD Performance and Health register a high percentage (in the green part of the graphs) your data should be safe, and as the numbers start going down and into the orange part of the graph start checking your drives for increasing number of bad sectors, possible noises, slowing performance, etc. so when the time comes, you can backup your data on time.
