I mean more is always better, but for the near future 16gb is more than enough unless you are doing a ton of video or photo editing that requires huge amounts of ram. 16gb should be more than enough for the lifetime/usefulness of the rest of the computer components.

also what they plan to do with it. if gaming is all some ones interested in, there's really no point in going over 16GB's of RAM as 8GB's will suffice for 99.9% of titles out there and i cant see it going past that soon. i would only go for more than 16GB's if your planing on some form of digital production, video editing, Photoshop, 3D rendering ect...

I currently have 16gb and I dont think it is enough for me personally if you want to open a ton of firefox browsers play games and other stuff at the same time such as vms youll be at like 14gb usage and the system will run slow so I think you should get 32 gb just incase you want to do similar stuff in the future

I think most wouldn't consider that a "normal/avevage" use, so unless the op is doing editing/VMs/ running SQL/Oracle/ec 16 GB is fine and over kill for most.

If thats not considered normal use thats fine then. Is that considered heavy usage?

your CPU will be limiting long before the RAM becomes a problem.

I currently run Vivaldi Browser with 17 tabs + WhatsAppWeb in the side panel, have steam running and iTunes
I'm @4.5GB RAM usage.
quickly jumped into BF1 (one of 0.1% of games that don't run smoothly with 8GB RAM at all times) for 8mins -- staying at 9,5GB RAM tops.

Yh I will upgrade it just to get a smoother experience I wont increase the load ill keep the same load but allow it to run smooth rather than laggy

Oh, yeah, if you're running VMs and stuff then upgrading to an i7-7700 would probably be a decent idea. But that's mostly because you get 4 more threads due to hyper-threading than the fact that it's newer; an i7-4790(k) would be nearly as good and save you from having to get new mobo + RAM.
