Netgear router giving horrible wifi speeds, Ethernet is fine.

I have a Netgear TEW-812DRU. For months I have been having horrible WiFi speeds, and I believed it was my ISP. I finally got around to getting help from the ISP but they told me that the full 150 mbps was coming into my house. I then went and connected my computer via ethernet to the router and got about 140 mbps.
If I restart the router I can get about 40 mbps for 30 minutes or so. And then it dramatically drops to 1.5 mbps, many times even less. I am going to be getting a Google WiFi router but the wait is 2-3 months, so I need some sort of a solution now. I don't need the full 150, but something that will actually allow me to load webpages and watch videos would be nice.

You may just have a defective router. Trendnet is known as a "value" router. Like most routers there are many that have identical internal processors and radios. A netgear r6400 internally has the same parts.

First will be to see if there is a firmware upgrade available, it may be a software bug. This is where a good name brand router helps because they tend to fix stuff more than some of the lessor known brands. Still trendnet at least has some download images for some routers.

It says it is compatible with dd-wrt so that may also be a option for alternative firmware.

You could also try the other band. In general if you get a failure of the radio chip it will only be 1 and not both. Since your ethernet works it means...

netgear or trendnet?

i find that model to be trendnet

http://www.trendnet.com/products/wifi/AC-routers/AC1750/TEW-812DRU

it doesn't have external antennas for wifi so signal must be rather weak

trendnet is not popular for their wifi routers, perhaps this one is rather a bad product?

other than try to set the wifi signal on a specific channel that is not in use by everybody where you live and also get access point, a wired one, patience while you get a better one

Wow I'm stupid. Yes it is trendnet, I was just setting up a temporary netgear router to see if it works better. I didn't buy it, it would not have been the one I picked.

so your isp gave it to you?

a good router always has two antennas, a great one has 4 and if you want maximum coverage, ad to that router with 4 antennas the acces point i mentioned, but a wired one, is not that expensive and alot better

also you can move the router from where it is now, away from a big thick wall if any near it, to improve signal

Oh no, it was my dad. But I'm the "computer guy" of my family so I deal with these issues. It is next to a wall but changing the position doesn't seem to affect the speeds. It is mostly weird because of how it works ok for the first 30 minutes and then performance tanks.
