Computer Randomly Turning Off and/or Restarting

I rebuilt my computer I had been using for 2+ years about 3 weeks ago, and everything was running great until yesterday. While watching a video on Youtube, my monitor randomly lost signal. I thought my DVI's connection came loose, but before I could unplug and plug it back in, my monitor got signal and showed my computer rebooting. I decided to let it go, as it had only happened that one time. However, a similar thing happened today, except my PC did not reboot, the screen just went black and stayed like that. While it was like that, I tried some of the locks on my keyboard (num lock, caps lock, etc) and got no response to pressing them. I am a bit worried, especially if I am working on something important and lose it because my PC randomly turns off. I am running an FX-8350 processor with an Asus M5A97 mobo, which were components I used in my previous build, and never had a single issue with. The only new components are RAM, and a Hyper 212 EVO, which replaced a stock cooler. Also, last week, I installed some LED's through molex, so I don't know if those could be an issue. (Tingkam was the brand of the LED's.) Is there anything I could check or do to try and stop these random reboots?

Solution
hmm, maybe the problem in the ram. The link below contains instructions to test the RAM through windows.

There is another tool to test the ram, in the link below
www.memtest86.com/

IF your PSU is not Bronze at least and 80+ certified then your pc can be in danger. Anyway run one of the test below and see if there is any problem in the ram. When I bought a DDR2 ram for my PC through Ebay I did both tests to make sure they are fine :)

Under error I am seeing a lot of Kernal-Boot, and it is showing it occurred today, so that could possibly be it. I am also seeing Dhcp-Client, and under critical, an error labelled Kernal-Power.

According to my bios, my CPU runs at between 35 and 40 degrees celcius at all times. Also, cool and quiet was set to always enabled, so I set it to always disabled. And yes, I used the pea method with thermal paste when applying my heatsink, and it went on nicely. (None fell onto the mobo or anything like that) I also noticed that the fan on my heatsink appears to be running very fast at times. (It was very quiet up until now) at one point, all I was doing was browsing the web, and I think the fan was running full speed, as the heatsink looked like it was slightly vibrating. Another thing, one of the standoffs had a stripped screw hole (It stays in the case perfectly fine, but the screw that secures the mobo spins endlessly) could that have anything to do with this?

Hi,

First about the stripped screw, if I under stood correctly it used to fix the MB the case so it should be fine.

Now I am afraid one thing, is the cooler is only maintaining the temp while no load. But as you run running something the cooler fail to maintain the temp so it hitting high temps which is known about AMD cpus (I have an AMD CPU) and for that the PC shuts off to protect your PC components from damage.

What can be done now:
1- Disable the LED's, then
2- Run a game or video (high quality) and keep an eye on the CPU temp. If the problem happens then (point 3)
3- If your old CPU cooler still working, try to install it and see if the problem happens again.

Lastly, double check if the parts installed correctly.

Okay, so I unplugged the LED's and tried some games. with both of the games I tried (Planet Coaster and GTAV, both of which I have have for months/years and always ran perfectly okay) my computer would shut down while loading the game. When I tried the game again, it loaded perfectly fine. I don't know if this is just a coincidence, but it doesn't seem that way, because my computer was periodically rebooting, about every two hours, until I tried this. Could this be a RAM issue? I'm really hoping it's not the PSU...

Okay, so after removing and putting the RAM back in, the error has stopped. (Today is the third day without it occurring) So hopefully it stays this way. Thanks for the help!

Ugh, so I thought everything was okay, as I had gone a week with nothing happening, but now its happening a lot more. I can't play any of my games, because within about 20 minutes of any game, my computer restarts. Should I just buy a new PSU? I have no idea what it could be, but the PSU is the last option I can think of. The current PSU is a corsair 80+ 600W that's about 2 years old, but I'm thinking of getting a modular and more powerful one...

Hi,

If removing and reinstalling the RAM solved the problem for a week then dont think the PSU has anything to do with the problem. But what Error it is generating now ?
Control Panel > Administrator Tools > Event Viewer > Check Critical or Errors.

Well, I'm still receiving the same error (kernel-power). The only reason I believe it's the PSU is because there is no BSOD, and I tried the RAM I was using before I rebuilt my PC, and the error still occurred.

Hello,

Im pretty new to this. I am looking for some help/suggestions as to why my computer retarts when I run games such as Diable 3 and LoL. I do know my system is dated, is that the issue? I am open to suggestions about some upgrades that I could do as I am willing to spend some money, but I am looking for a modest system as I am not interetsed in runnig games such as Battlefield on ultra settings. Being able to play Diablo and LoL without any problems will be enough.

My current system:

Operating System
Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit SP1

CPU
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
Kentsfield 65nm Technology

RAM
4.00GB Dual-Channel DDR2 @ 399MHz (5-5-5-18)

Motherboard
ASUSTeK Computer INC. P5N32-E SLI (Socket 775)

Graphics
LG ULTRAWIDE (2560x1080@60Hz
4096MB ATI Radeon RX 460 Graphics

Storage
119GB OCZ-VERT EX4 SCSI Disk Device (ATA)
232GB SAMSUNG SP2504C SCSI Disk Device

Optical Drives
TSSTcorp CD/DVDW SH-S182D ATA Device

Audio
AMD High Definition Audio Device

Any help/suggestions is appreciated.

Hi,

You can buy a new PSU if you think the problem caused by it, but sometimes the system goes off without showing the blue screen to protect the system from any harm. Assuming you ran the RAM test I suggested before and you got 0 problems, try to a test that push the CPU and GPU to the max and see if the problem occur IF yes, then replace the CPU cooler with the old one and rerun the test again and see.

Link below contains a list of test tools for PC:

Hi,

It is better to create a new thread for this, so you can get answer directly to your problem. Also I would suggest to add what PSU you have + what errors the OS is reporting (Control Panel > Administrator Tools > Event Viewer > Check Critical or Errors.).

I think 4 GB RAM is not enough you need at least 8GB.

Okay, so I ran the torture test on my CPU, and that ran for about 30 minutes before restarting. However, the stress test for my GPU was actually hard to get to run, as right before the test began, my PC restarted. I got it to work after about four tries, and it only ran for about 5 seconds before a restart. Could it be the GPU? I just want to make sure I know exactly what the issue is before taking my motherboard out to replace the heatsink with the old one...

EDIT: It's not the GPU. I put my brothers 1080 in and still came across the same issue...

Hi,

Seems the problem either in:
1- The CPU cooler: Check the wire that is coming out from the cooler is connected to the right port on the MB. I had kernal-power before because my laptop cooler was failing.
2- A problem in the RAM, but you did the tests I suggested. As RAM can be damaged and causes so much errors and problems.
3- Check the small things on the MB, if there are any burned or their surfaces is not flat.

Try your brother PSU, and see. Maybe short in power (but I am doubting this).

Regards,
