Say I have two drives:
A) Samsung 850 PRO 512 GB 2.5 inch SATA III SSD
B) Samsung 960 PRO M.2-2280 512GB PCI Express 3.0 x4 NVMe SSD
and my intentions are to have one drive for OS and programs, and another for project files, scratch and media cache (on a 4k editing machine), which drive would I use for which purpose?

My current thinking is that boot-up speeds/loading times with an 850 Pro won’t actually be improved that much by a 960 Pro, so it makes sense to use the 960 Pro for data. The build also includes long-term storage with WD Blacks.

Many thanks in advance. This is my first post on this forum, so if I've not followed etiquette please let me know.

IMO your productivity efficiency should take priority over your boot times, therefor i would use the m.2 for data and the sata for data. Your ssd should be booting your system in no more than 10 seconds, how much faster do you really need.

"m.2 for data and the sata for data"?! Sounds like you mean SATA for programs :)

Agreed. To be honest, I'd be happy with any boot-time faster than 30 secs! Never built a system anywhere near this fast.
