1st gen i7 3.06GHz displaying in hardware monitors as 3.2GHz??

Hi guys. Quick one... I have a second hand (very elderly but well performing) gaming pc, running a 1st edition i7 950 chip, and I wondered why the CPU is coming up in hardware monitors as being 3.2GHz?? Is this just a lie, or has this been ever so slightly OC'd?? I am fairly well educated with pc's, but not one bit when it comes to the BIOS or OC-ing.
Many thanks for any interest.
Kenton.

Hi Barty, Yes I am sure of this, but a quick check in the bios and it states that it is an i7 950 @ 3.07GHZ, but underneath it says Frequency 3.06GHz... Many thanks for the reply mate, I would upload a picture of the bios, but I am a proper newbie and don't know how yet! :??:
Many thanks,
Kenton

Can you remove your CPU and look to see what's printed on it? It may be a false reading from the BIOS detecting it as a 950.

As I mentioned, an i7-960 is 3.2 to 3.6, and an i7-940 is 2.93 to 3.2, so could actually be either of those...... even the i7-965 (extreme) is 3.2 to 3.46GHz.,

All Bloomfield chips, entirely possible the BIOS is incorrectly detecting the chip.

I would remove it, but at the moment, i have not got any thermal paste and i cant figure out how to remove my CPU cooler! it is very similar to a coolermaster Hyper 212, but the release lugs have not got a twist-to-unlock style top to them. I am very interested to get to the bottom of this though.

Hi James, it must be something like this. But as Barty said, the best idea before we go any further would be to see what is printed on the chip itself, and go from there. As soon as i work out how to release the heatsink and purchase some thermal paste, i will update!! I will not leave this until i know the reason behind this! ;) I know the MB is an antique now, but it runs so damn well with windows 10 Pro 64, and it is not running the last (most up to date) update of the bios, as it has been running faultlessly and i do not want to upset it. (could this be a factor maybe??)
Many thanks to both of you for your input.

Well, you never said what kind of mobo you have, it may be a common issue with it. You can research that.

Also if you want to post images you just upload them to a third party site like: http://imgur.com/
and then use the share link and get a BBcode to embed it, or just copy the URL.

Hi James, It's an Asus rampage ii extreme! I have been looking around and it seems as there is conflicting views on this! I need to get some thermal paste at the weekend! Cheers again mate!
