Does anybody know of a good, legal way to download old pc games that have been ported to either windows 10 or linux?

One of the games I want to get is king kong the official game of the movie, I remember playing this years ago but I have since lost it and I remember how rediculous it was to get it working on any other windows other than XP.

When you search Google, make sure you find out whether they just ran compat mode after install, or tried installing it in compat mode for XP on W10. It can make a difference.

I've also seen a post on the Ubi forum where one guy had to do something with the installshield wizard just to get it to install on XP even. So you might want to check there too.

I've also checked some chat on Steam forums, and although there was a thread there about StarForce, some thought StarForce was a non issue, and just didn't like the game.

What I'm saying is a lot of what you read on the net can be taken with a grain of salt. Then again, that was a movie derived game of mediocre popularity, so it didn't exactly get AAA support.
Amazon has it for $9.99 digital, and $11.48 disc. If you're the type that winds up with lost or damaged discs, I would consider the digital.

It should still run on W10 if you use XP compat mode. You may however have to run the Windows Troubleshoot Compatibility wizard before installing.

Made for XP games aren't "ported" to W10 though, or Vista, 7, or 8. Windows uses Compatibility Mode for backwards compatibility. It's just that a lot of people don't know how to use it, or especially how to install via it when necessary.

Note that in W10, I don't necessarily recommend trusting it's Use Recommended Settings option, where it often chooses Vista. Instead select the Troubleshoot option, and when it asks what OS it worked in previously, choose XP.

You will see the Troubleshoot Compatibility option once you right click the game's install exe. In W10 it should be about the 5th option from the top of the list shown when right clicking. This list is called the Context Menu of the Explorer shell.

Thanks, I knew of compatibility mode, but after searching on google I didn't find anybody playing it on windows 10 and I read a few things that said it won't work on windows 10, so I just presumed that it also won't work with compatibility mode. I also read that it uses the StarForce copy protection system, I read that if it was installed onto windows 7 or 8 it would cause major stability issues and it was almost impossible to get rid of, I believe it even caused hardware failure so that is why I'm really cautious about installing it onto my PC.

ok thanks, I guess I will try installing it then. I also read that the downloadable versions now don't have Starforce anymore because everybody hated Starforce for the reasons I have already said so I guess I'll try installing it now :) thank you
