When I turn my PC on the fans start spinning and the LEDs come on but this only lasts for about 5 secs before turning off. The only thing I can see effecting the PC is the CPU power pin socket does not exactly match that of the PSU. By this I mean some of the sockets are square and others are sort of half square half oval, however it still fits fine and I didn't notice it when I put it together. When the CPU is not connected the fans all run and stay on. This is my first build please offer any help.

Solution
The connector on the motherboard looks fine, the power connector on the psu is abit off. I would first try to test with another psu if able or return this one if possible and ask for a refund so you can get a proper psu.

Yes that is the exact part I am using. The motherboard socket is however different, I know it is the right one because it is labelled CPU and is the only 8 pin connectter on the board. On the image above, there are 2 square sockets, on my motherboard this is repeated on both sides of the socket.

I'm now 99% sure something is wrong with either that connection or the CPU itself.

Can you test with another psu? maybe from a friend or a local shop ..

I do think this has to do with the cpu power socket and the connector not fitting,it should fitt.If not having another psu to try send this one back (rma) with the reason above, explain to the shop, get a refund or another, since looking at it better, psu and test again.

Yes I applied thermal paste and removed the sticker from the cooler. The fan is cooler master and seems to be running fine. Is there such a thing as too much thermal paste?

Okay so I've troubleshot everything I can think of now and it's either a faulty cpu(really can't see it overheating with minimal components plugged it, cooler and thermal paste directly on it and outside the case.) or the socket for the CPU power. Either way I will have to send one of these two parts back.
The CPU power socket is here-

The PSU socket is in a link a bit further up the thread
