So I was customizing a system and I wondered, "Should I go with 3way GTX 970 sli or GTX 1070 SLI?" I know NVIDIA doesn't talk about 3 or 4 way sli much. So 2 1070s or 3 970s?

Solution
DX12 and forward, 3- and 4-way SLI is not supported. Which is to say, it might work if you try, but if there are issues, they're never going to be fixed. And as time goes on, game engines themselves will also drop support for the third and fourth GPUs and they'll go unused anyway. In short, now, there's no reason to consider 3- or 4-way SLI of any kind.

1 GTX 1070 is faster than 3x 970s, plus it has more ram so playing at 1440P and higher isn't a problem. SLI doesn't stack ram, each card uses it's own ram. SLI is a pain in the butt, plus many games don't play nice. So unless you are playing at 4k and want more than 60FPS, don't go SLI.

SpencerGoshorn, It's not possible for a GTX 1070 to out preform a GTX 1080. The 1070 overclocked may come close to a stock 1080, but not faster.

SLI (and CF) are not needed anymore.
You can have a decent performance on a single card as of today.
in addition to power usage, heat, noise, game support and other multi GPU issues, there is one fundamental problem with multi GPU that can not be solved with driver update or anything else. Higher input lag. And it kills the fun in high end gaming.

No short story In my opinion I wouldn't have two graphic cards get a gtx 1080 but for your awnser the 2 gtx 1070 is more bang for the buck then 3 gtx 970s
