As the title specifies, I am looking to possibly upgrade my gaming desktop that I built in 2013. It was my first time building a rig from scratch, so this is my first time to look at upgrading it. I use it for gaming, mainly ESO but I also run games like Skyrim SE and Witcher 3. I also use Lightroom and Photoshop significantly.
I have seen some significant slow down on ESO and while I acknowledge it could be game related, I tend to assume my over 3 year old setup might be showing its age. Any suggestions would help!

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-Z87X-UD4H ATX LGA 1150
CPU: INTEL I7-4770K
GPU: EVGA GTX770 2GB
PSU: CORSAIR 600W
RAM: CORSAIR 8GB 2X4
HD: WD Blue 1TB HDD
Cooling: COOLMAST HYPER 212

Solution

Its dead easy. Get one with enough room on it for your system and anything you can work on in Lightroom and photoshop.

I would go for a 500Gb to 1Tb Samsung 850 evo.

Install either Samsung magician, or MiniTool Partition...

I would look at upgrading your RAM to 16GB total and adding an SSD to drastically improve load times.

Additionally, while the 770 is probably still ok, I would look at a 1060 or 1070 depending on how important graphical settings are to you and at what resolution. The 2GB is pretty skimpy by today's standards.

Your processor is still perfectly fine.

If you have a budget in mind it might help to make more specific suggestions.

Firstly, get your self a SSD, and install windows and your most frequently used programs on that. That will be the single thing that improves performance in your PC.

The rest of the system is good spec, but you could upgrade the graphics card to a 1060 6gb if you want more graphics performance.

Budget is ~$500 and is somewhat flexible.

I do like better graphic performance, but I am looking to improve overall performance. I notice a significant lag when I have lightroom and photoshop on at the same time.

I am interested in doing a SSD boot drive for Windows 10, but I'll be honest, I am not even remotely confident in doing that. Is there a documentation on how to do that?

With respect to RAM is it better to have more sticks with less RAM or less sticks with more RAM, i.e. 2X8 vs 4X4 for 16GB?

Install either Samsung magician, or MiniTool Partition wizard and you can migrate your OS and data to the SSD.

The performance boost of a SSD is far far more than just getting 16gb of ram (although thats also a good option).

So in order of bang for buck from the recommendations:

1. New SSD and migrate OS
2. Increase RAM
3. Upgrade video card with more RAM.

Thanks for the assist!

I agree with Rob that an SSD is definitely where you will notice the biggest quality of life change. The 500GB Samsung he recommended gives you plenty of room for your OS, Adobe programs, and a few games.

With the reported slowdown using LR and PS, that's where the increase in RAM will be help out a lot.

With a flexible budget of $500 I'd say you can make all three upgrades and be thoroughly happy with the performance.
