Hi there.

I've recently built myself a X99 system, mainly 50% gaming 50% Workstation

My build:
All housed in NZXT H440
Asus X99A-II
i7 6800k
Corsair H100i v2
Asus GTX 1070 Strix OC 8G
32gb 4X8 Corsair Vegeance LED
m.2 SM961 512GB (boot drive + important programs)
Samsung 500GB 850 Evo (mainly for game storage)
2TB Seagate for mass storage (recordings, renderings, music, videos, images etc)

I'm really scared of overclocking as there are so many things to understand and do that I'm completely lost. My system is well ventilated due to 3 120mm fans at front of the case, 2 120mm from the radiator and 140m exhaust fan alongside the AIO for my 6800k. So there is plenty of room to keep my components cool for overclocking.

My problem is I'm clueless and my first attempt lead to a failed overclock. I tried to overclock 6800k to 4.2Ghz (atleast I think I did) with 1.275 Cpu voltage.

Does anyone have experience with Asus X99, 6800k overclocking to help get a solid foundation going. I'm mainly aiming for atleast 4Ghz to compete with 6700k interms of single core performance and a monster for multi-thread performance due to each clock being around 4Ghz.

Please be gentle with me, with terminology and process.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I'm just not sure if the settings I changed were the correct ones. I'll try 1.35 if I'm confident on the correct settings overall to change. I currently have Prime95 for stress test, is there any others you'd recommend? If I get a successful overclock, I'll stress test for 6 hours, some people say 12 or even 24.

Things I did were change the core clocks to be the same and 42 multiplier, changed cpu voltage to 1.275, changed something (forgot) from 102 to 100.

Raise the voltage up to 1.35 volts a 4.2ghz and let me know what it does

Going to have a break for today. Wanted to tweak a 4.0Ghz OC as it was stable in Prime95 at 1.225V for a long period then I lost a worker but now keeps crashing after bumping it to 1.23 and 1.24to achieve the stable 4.0Ghz.. Not sure whats going on there. But I'll try another day.

Firstly I want to get a good 4.0Ghz sorted then I'll do the 4.2. Seems like the best option for now. Rather than jumping in deep right off the bat

I've set 4.2  1.35 and system is currently being stressed this is with my XMP off - Using ROG Realbench to stress the CPU

I did try 4.2 with Adaptive to see what voltage would be set without me having to set it, but that attempt resulted in a crash

UPDATE: 4.2 @ 1.35V around 60 degrees. Is that good?

When I try to enable XMP my overclock crashes... Not entirely sure whats going on.

Is it because I have 2666mhz ram that the issue? I've read that the BCLK is meant to be adjusted to match ratios for both RAM/CPU but it stayed at 100 mhz?

Am I meant to set a ratio for BCLK that matches CPU multipler with my RAM 2666mhz?

Now I am unable to enter BIOS as my keyboard is no longer working when I attempt enter BIOS. Not sure what's just happened. I just had a success stress test at 4.2 @ 1.3V and wanted to try lowering voltage or try to increase the core clock but can't now.

Keyboard and mouse are in usb 2.0 slots. Neither work upon restart and "press f2/Del to enter bios"

To my knowledge you don't need XMP activated you should have a multipler and you change the BLK to equal 4.2 ghz by what ever your multiplier number I don't understand what you mean by equaling the cpu multipler with ram you should have to mess with ram at all
also yes 4.2 ghz at 60 degrees underload is good hell my old i7 870 ran at 3.6 ghz and ran at 70 degrees so that temperature isn't bad

Now you said you can't access anything because your keyboard and mouse ain't working here try this I guess

http://www.wikihow.com/Reset-Your-BIOS

attempt "METHOD 2" "METHOD 3" it will reset any modifications you've done to your cpu and set everything back to default see if your keyboard works then

I'll check in on that later on. Currently doing a 4-6 hour stress test in AIDA64 with the current 4.2@1.3V. (I reckon I could maybe play around with this later, maybe get 4.3 with 1.3V or maybe lower voltage and stay at 4.2.

Currently getting an average of 57/58c range for my 4.2@1.3V under load from Aida64

What I mean by XMP and cpu/matching is that guides I've watched showed that you need to link BCLK to cpu ratio with yuor RAM speeds to get a successful overclock of RAM and CPU? <I may be wording this wrong but when they activate XMP they had to adjust ratios for CPU & RAM>

My ram at stock is 2666Mhz but since I'm not in XMP it's at 2133 due to motherboard (i think) or cpu. I just wanted to try to overclock my CPU and get my ram to it's stock speed. I thought this was done through XMP

But for now, I'll take a 4.2Ghz overclock and 2133 over a bad overclock and faster RAM

UPDATE: Aida64 stress test 4.2Ghz @ 1.3V - Average tempt around 57c with power consumption of average 68-70W..

Not too sure how good that is.

I thought your keyboard and mouse wasn't working don't "Do not do the REST BIOS LINK" that I sent you it would be pointless

They are not working on the ASUS Bios page where I need to press F2/Del to enter Bios. After that they work fine

The solution to my keyboard/mouse and BIOS screen hanging when it asks to press f2/Del has been solved. Since my fan splitter wass no longer being used I removed the "perif" molex power... I reinserted it and now its back to normal. DERP

So a little update I've managed to get XMP enabled so my RAM is at stock speeds plus a stable 4.2ghz overclock.. Might try for 4.3/4.4 and see how far I can go.. I think I'll set myself a max of 1.35v.. I'd like to stay around 60 degrees under 100 load for safety and longevity sake.

1.35v @ 4.2 is a bit much.....shouldn't need that much. If you're seeing instability on 4.2 at less than 1.3v, it's likely due to input voltage being a tad too low, or the System Agent voltage not hitting the sweet spot.

There's a ton of good information in this thread, and a lot of really good people that can help to answer questions. Most of the ASUS X99 bios settings are exactly alike, so it's easy to adapt and learn with what you see here.

My system is curently very stable with XMP enabled and 4.2Ghz @ 1.3v I could potentially try lowering the voltage to see how much lower I can go but I don't have the time just yet.

I'll check it out
