Putting 6700k in 65w tdp mobo

So I have a micro atx hp mobo that came with skylake 6700 (non-k). mobo says 65w tdp. But i know that with turbo boost it actually violates tdp. So why not regularly violate tdp? I have my whole system liquid cooled so the processor would never reach high temps. Thoughts?

Solution

Versus a 6700? Certainly not enough for it to be worth the money, kaby lake performs nearly identical to skylake at the same clock speed.

If you have the money to liquid cool your whole system why on earth are you using some OEM HP mobo?

To answer your question it will probably be okay, if you encounter an instability or overheating you should probably disable turbo boost, if the HP BIOS will even let you.

from the article you linked it showed the average usage is only about 4 watts more? I feel like that is a safe bet.

No..look at 6700 under heavy load

5-10w under load, according to that article. However, this might be enough. I'm leaning toward it being likely to work, but to be honest the difference between a 6700 and 6700K is so tiny it might disappear into background noise even in benchmarks, nevermind being able to notice it in real world use.

Although interesting in principle, even a 7700K at stock will probably be visually indistinguishable from the 6700 it replaced. Seems an expensive science experiment, but I suppose hobbies don't always have to make any financial sense.

Yes since I saw that the 6700 heavily violated the tdp I wanted to know whether I could put a k processor in and still have it work even though it's an OEM HP Mobo rated for 65 w. I will more than likely replace the Mobo afterwards
