Would this eBay rig be good start for gaming?

Has a Xeon X5570 2.93GHz Quad Core processor and 12gb of ddr3 ram
would it be possible to slap in a gtx 1050 to this pc and it work well? or is that even possible

It looks good to me, but for a small start in gaming. Don't expect a full on 4k experience. If you want to use the 1050, ensure that there is a free PCI-e slot on the motherboard and that the power supply is capable enough to handle it.

but it has PCIe spots but it says Gen 2.
a gtx 1050 says it is gen 3, so I'm assuming it would not work at all. is this true?

It'll work just fine all PCI slots are backwards compatible

Agreed with the above. It's backwards compatible. I run a PCI 3.0 card on my PCI 2.0 slot.
