GTX 1080 What display to buy? 2K or 4K?

Solution
Personally I would go with 1440p screen while you maybe able to push 4k you should have no problem at 1440p for years to come at good settings (assuming you also have a current CPU).

I personally would stick with a single 1080 and get a 1440p 144Hz G-Sync monitor.

There are quite a few games that would require you to dial back the settings with a single 1080 at 4K. Getting two of them in SLI would solve that for games that support it but there are quite a few that don't. DirectX 12 games in particular don't seem to support SLI as often so this might be more of a problem going forward.

Given me somthing to consider ill go with the 2k just for the idea of knowing it should be able to handle games in the future

And what would that be? I dont know of any. The first 4k 144hz monitors are supposed to roll out in Q2 2017 and cost several thousand dollars.

You cant buy that monitor, its not out yet. Its supposed to be released Q3 2017 and will probably cost several thousand dollars.

That monitor isn't available yet and when it is it will be ridiculously expensive. Also, 4K at 60 FPS is tough for current GPUs. Even though that monitor supports 144Hz at 4K there are going to be very few games that will take advantage of that high refresh rate no matter what GPU you have. Since you mentioned League of Legends, that game might be able to but any AAA titles will not.

for a 4K 144Hz G-Sync monitor you are going to want a minimum of a Titan X or SLI 1080s.

I know you've already picked a solution but I would like to put in my two-cents as well.

I also have a 1080 and was in your situation not too long ago, I was going to go with two monitors, one 2k and one 4k for games that run well on 4k I would use the 4k monitor, and in games that don't I would use a 144Hz 1440p.

I got talked out of that because of all the reasons 4k is not very good right now (you need more than a 1080 to hit 60fps in most games and that means a Titan XP and a ridiculous budget plus you are limited to 60Hz, until Asus comes out with 144Hz soon, but even more already nonexistent single-gpu power to hit that.).

Anyways I got talked into UWQHD, and I am very much looking forward to it. I plan on getting the Acer Predator X34P when it comes out and trying out my 1080.

UW doesnt come without hassles and a lot of games don't natively support it, but there are plenty of addons and mods that will make it work.

144Hz is nice, but I think for me I will take 100Hz UW.

I have been gaming at 4k for the past year on an older i7-3770K cpu, Samsung U28E590D, and a recent upgrade to an EVGA GTX1080 FTW.

I play World of Warcraft, OverWatch, Deus Ex MD, Dishonored 2, etc all at native 4k and I rarely drop below 60FPS.

I was running an oldeer GTX 780Ti prior to the 1080 and it was pretty solid at 4k, but could bog down badly in big raids or heavy fire in Overwatch.

Take the 4k plunge if you can, the Samsung U28E590D is now down to $400.00 and runs a solid 1ms response time.

I'm really happy with it and am considering adding two more monitors and potentially another 1080 FTW in SLI if I find 2 grand laying around.

Cheers!
