Seperate SSD with all games on it causing freezing

Hey there everyone,

I have recently bought a new Samsung EVO 500 GB SSD to put all of my video games on. I have a LOT, so I thought it'd be a smart purchase. The only problem I am having now is that after a few minutes (it varies) playing a game, it freezes and crashes. For example, Battlefield 4 will crash after about 15 minutes. Need for Speed: Most Wanted will crash after about 5-7. It's a really annoying problem, especially with multiplayer games such as BF4. Has this happened to any of you, and have any found a fix? Here's what I've done so far:

-Switched cables
-Switched order of SATA cables on motherboard (1 is OS, 2 is games, 3 is another HDD, 4 is DVD drive)
-Changing game settings

My current specs:

  • ASrock Z75 Pro3 (can't afford anything better)
Intel Core i3-3240 @ 3.40 GHz (once again can't afford better)
MSI GTX 960 (overclocked a bit, maybe this is the problem?)
    2 SSD's (OS and games)
    1 HDD (Misc)
    1 DVD drive
    Windows 10

If anyone can think of a fix, it would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Check your event log for SATA reset events (event ID 129). If you do have those, there may be an easy to fix issue with your power management config (detailed here: https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/kevinholman/2013/06/21/event-id-129-storachi-reset-to-device-deviceraidport0-was-issued/ ) or possibly a hardware problem with your chipset or drive. Check the power management fix first. If that doesn't fix the issue, then you may have to replace the SSD or the motherboard.

Thanks for the quick response. I checked the event viewer and saw no Error 129s. I also made a custom view that only checked for error 129, nothing. I followed his steps anyways, and I'll update this message if it works. The power management option was already set to off, but I changed my setting to High Performance. Thank you!

Update: It didn't work, unfortunately.

Downloading right now, my internet is extremely slow at the moment. In the meantime, I'd like to mention that I went to the BIOS and checked the storage settings. I have nothing in the SATA3_0 slot because it is right behind my graphics card. If I move my GPU down, I can access that, which will allow me to change the device type in the BIOS to Solid State Drive.

Yes, it lists it as "Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB"

Actually, I just rescanned the drives and it recognized them now. I am looking for errors now.
RAPID mode is off, I could turn that on. It's also saying that the Games SSD is only running SATA 3.0GB/s, I could move it like I said earlier. It might help?

Don't bother with RAPID. It does no better than the Windows caching, except for the benchmark numbers. It could actually harm your real performance due to memory being taken up by the cache. Windows will give up the cache and use the memory for apps if the memory is needed RAPID won't. It's not worth it just for benchmark numbers.

Actually, I just checked the main OS SSD, it's running SATA 6.0GB/s. Like I said, I'm gonna try moving my graphics card and plugging it in to SATA3_0.

So here's my current situation. The SATA3_0 port is broken, so I am buying a new motherboard, which means buying basically a new everything (intel i5 6600k, ddr4 ram, asus z170). So at that point, I will have 4 SATA 3 ports, all running at 6 GB/s. I'll update this thread again and see if that fixes my original problem.

Sorry to hear it. If any of the leads on the broken SATA port are crossing, that may be the cause of your original issue.

Turns out it was just my SATA cable that was broken, not the motherboard. I got it all hooked up, running SATA 3 at 6 GB/s, but
turns out it's still having the same issue. I really don't know what to do at this point. Any other suggestions?

May be a problem elsewhere that coincidentally started with the new drive install.

Would recommend downloading DDU and uninstalling gpu drivers in safe mode then reinstalling latest.

After that I'd install msi afterburner and set up the on screen display to show cpu and gpu temps and utilization.

Could also check your event log for other errors and warnings to see what was happening right before a crash.

I watched the error log as my game crashed, and it gave me an event ID 4101, which is "Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered." I'm probably going to reinstall my drivers, as you said,
