my xp no longer turns on. no light at all. the power supply unit's light is still on but the whole cpu in no longer showing "no signal" but is completely dead. i live in columbus ohio. what stores that sell motherboards? and do i have to get a new mtherboard as long as the models applies to windows xp? or just other cpu motherboard will do? on top of that what about the cmos battery? if the battery dies, does that mean the motherboard will go die? if i were to get a new cmos battery then the motherboard will be fine?

but what i'm say is..a dead motherboard means the battery can be dead? and if i were to get a new cmos, then it should bring the motherboard to life?

A motherboard with a dead CMOS battery won't remember settings that you have made in the BIOS after it is powered off, but it won't be completely dead. It will boot to the pre-BIOS screen, say that the configuration has changed and press F1 to enter the BIOS. That does not sound like your symptoms.

I think you are over-your-head. You probably need assistance. I would recommend getting (paying) a computer science college student to assist you ...
You may have a bad power supply, bad motherboard, or a cable that has come unplugged. You are going to need hands-on assistance.
