Hi,

I am building a CHEAP (Keyword) PC for 1080p gaming for my college going cousin. We were going with some recent hardware but the budget got halved suddenly...

So...

What are your thoughts on a i5 3470 paired with some cheap ass mobo + 8 gb ddr3 1600 ram and a gtx 1060 8gb for 2016 n coming games??

I am looking at 1080p gaming with ultra (hence, 1060) and sub 60 fps performance.

Is it worth it? If it's Real cheap?

(Mobo plus cpu at 180ish USD)

I think that would be a well balanced build and should perform great for 1080p gaming. I run a 1060 with an i5-4440 and really enjoy it, and my processor performs maybe 5% better than the ivy bridge 3470.

$180 for motherboard and an ivy bridge processor sounds like a reasonable bargain, it's about $70 or $80 less than you'd spend for an equivalent Skylake or Haswell system.

I would suggest getting a more expensive motherboard and cpu while getting a slightly less powerful graphics card, I currently have a gtx 960ti 4gb and can run DS3 at max settings with around 40-60 fps. While the graphics card is imortant so are all the other pieces of the computer. I would also split the 8gb of ram into 2 4gb sticks to reduce CAS latency, but thats just my personal preference.

Here are some cheaper motherboards to look at.
GIGABYTE GA-B85M-DS3H-A LGA 1150 Intel B85
GIGABYTE G1.Sniper B7 (rev. 1.0) LGA 1151 Intel B150

I would suggest an MSI board but I know people usually don't like them, its what i run usually though.

Also for up and coming games you wont need more than 4gb of VRAM, the money would be better spent on getting either a SSD for your operating system or as i suggested before, getting better parts for your PC. Keep in mind that a more powerful graphics card is going to need a decent power supply to keep it afloat. So I would say if possible move the money around to different parts but you should be able to create a decent computer for gaming.

What is your budget?

I'd go for something like this:

PCPartPicker part list: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZzBwD8
Price breakdown by merchant: https://pcpartpicker.com/list/ZzBwD8/by_merchant/

CPU: Intel Core i3-7100 3.9GHz Dual-Core Processor ($136.25 @ B&H)
Motherboard: ASRock H110M-HDS Micro ATX LGA1151 Motherboard ($46.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: $183.24
Prices include shipping, taxes, and discounts when available

Either that or drop down to a 1060 3GB and see if that can get you an i5-6500/7500.

I am looking fo 1080p gaming. And it will be STRICTLY offline. No online games, just campaigns and stuff. So I guess CPU wont be overtaxed in most games.

I have some components. Budget translates to 730 USD. But I am in India, so the parts carry big taxes and stuff..

Yes. I assumed so, because I upgraded from a g3258 to i7 4790k earlier last year and for the most part, gaming performance stayed the same!

Thanks for the mobo suggestions.I prefer MSI too. I am getting GPU with long term in mind while the other parts are just a deal I have got.

budget is 730 usd. but I am in India, so most components bar a few carry a good 20-30% price buff as comp. to US prices.

I was considering an i3 yes. But I am getting this mobo n cpu at a cheap price.

So thinking if this will tide me over at last a year and half or two..I could upgrade then..
