I have ASUS R558UR laptop running windows 10 with TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100 HDD. Recently I've observed that when I turn off the display (not putting laptop in sleep or hibernate mode) the HDD spins down, but then immediately starts up as system is not idle. This continues till I turn on the display, and this continuous spin down and spin up is creating noise and I'm worried about its effect on HDD's health. I tried removing all the Intel's IO SATA AHCI drivers (iaStorA.sys) in the device manager, but then the IDE ATA/ATAPI section disappeared, and on rebooting, I got the BSOD INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE so I had to run system restore. How to stop the spin down? thanks

Done that (changed HDD to sleep to 'never' on both battery and plugged in), and I observed that the spin down is occurring when system is running on battery. When plugged in, there is no spin down. Is this some battery saving technique of system? there must be an option somewhere to turn it off.

As stated in the official site, this HDD (TOSHIBA MQ01ABD100) is a power efficient drive, so I think this spin down is implemented in its firmware. So maybe there isn't much we can do about that. Thanks for the replies, though.
