i got a computer with linux on it and after a long 3 day struggle just to install steam i find out my games fps are trash. ive decided i want to go back to windows, this is where i need your help. i have a single boot. i have a windows 7 cd which i plan on using to get windows again, but heres where things get problematic. ive got an ssd that is blank and i try to boot off of i get something like this "insert a media etc" and when i do, it doesnt register it. it just keeps saying "insert a media and press a key" i could sit there pressing a key for hours with my cd in and still get nothing. so i switched back to my hdd (linux) and try to find a way to delete linux from inside. i just want this os GONE! i dont want to download another linux and put it on a usb drive and use that NO! I WANT IT GONE I DONT WANT ANYTHING TO DO WITH IT! if any of you know a way to delete linux and render linux unusable to the state where my computer would ask me for a OS cd i would appreciate it. ive looked all over for self destruct commands or something but i cant find anything i could enter into the terminal and have it delete itself.

Solution
You don't say what your hardware is... desktop.. laptop.. brand/model? So here are some generic steps that might work.
1. As soon as you turn on power to the computer, start hitting the DEL key repeatedly. This should give you access to BIOS settings.
2. In BIOS set your boot priority to DVD Drive as first boot option. Insert the Win7 dvd in the drive then hit F10 to save BIOS changes and reboot.
3. This should have automatically booted you into the Win7 installation dvd. If not... You may need to turn power completely off then on to boot to the dvd successfully.
4. Choose advanced options in the installation dvd and delete the partitions used by Linux.
5. Either exit or install Win7

There isn't any real way to delete an os that is running. You can of course break it with dd command. Be careful though using dd will make it totally unusable. Something like delete the mbr

sudo dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/sda bs=446 count =1

Can't really help you boot Windows. ..

Btw you fps issues are probably just because you are using the opensource drivers and not latest proprietary drivers... installing steam takes all of 5 minutes in any case. Very easy.

Thanks this for windows 7 on my computer. My problem now is my drive isn't being detected (hdd the one with Linux) so I can't access any files. Checked my disk management and it says it's online but it's not accessing it don't know why. Everything is up to date. When I right click on it only thing I can do is delete and help. Update: I figured it out. It was formatted for Linux so I had to delete volume and start from scratch. Unfortunate as I was kinda liking the idea of a dual boot. Oh well
