I'm having a problem where whenever i turn on my computer and run google or any application it turns itself off. I used to have my PC turn off because of it overheating and now i think it might have damaged something and now is difficult to use. Whenever I want to turn on the computer I turn it on once let if shut itself off then run the power supply in its secondary mode.(I have a power supply where you can change the watts with the flip of this switch) after letting it be in the high watts for about 5 mins it will not turn itself off when I flip it back and turn it on. I just ordered a new power supply and fan off amazon and if it stops this problem then great but till it arrives what else could be the problem if that is not the case.

After you changed your psu, then my best bet is your cpu are not getting its heat off. Meaning the heatsink might not working properly due to bad thermal paste. Thermal paste has lifetime, sometimes it can hold up to 10 years, sometimes it need to be replace after 5 years.

If the problem persist after you changed psu, clean the cpu's heatsink (make sure the fan still spinning), if its stil not working, then its time to buy the thermal past. It should be around $5.

Please post your complete system specs and more info if you want to get more specific answers. Which component was overheating, CPU, GPU or motherboard? Why was it overheating? Did you have a failed fan? Why did you keep using it? Did you fix the overheating issue. You do know that excessive heat can cause permanent hardware damage.

What PSU do you have and how old is it? Most likely it's the PSU responsible for your issues and a new PSU will fix them. If a new PSU doesn't change anything then you may have hardware damage on your motherboard or something else depending on which component was overheating.
