Hey guys,

So I recently built a PC for my brother, using a combination of old and new parts. After wiring everything up, I turned on the PC and everything works fine; the lights come on and the fans spin for almost every component.

However, the issue is when I tried hooking it up to a monitor, there is no display for the BIOS, so i can't use it. I even tried using another monitor, another cable (VGA and HDMI), and even plugging into the motherboard display ports as well. Still nothing.

Here are the specs:
CPU: Intel Core i3 4170 (w/ stock cooler)
Motherboard: MSI Z87 G45
RAM: Corsair Vengeance 8GB DDR3 1600MHz
GPU: Sapphire Radeon HD 7970 3GB
SSD: I forgot the model but its some like generic brand, I don't think it's relevant anyways.
PSU: EVGA 500B
Case: Corsair HAF 912

If anyone could help me out with this issue, that would be awesome :).

Solution

In your case it is the only way, unfortunately. ASUS has a feature called "BIOS Flashback", which allows flashing the BIOS without the CPU, directly from USB stick. This, however, only works on its higher-tier motherboards, not all of them. And I have not yet heard of any other manufacturer implementing the same feature on their mobos - it is very rarely needed, but when it is...
Full system specs would help ;)

Try clearing CMOS first. Either by removing the battery for a minute or two, or by shorting a CLR_CMOS jumper near the battery. Of course, unplug the computer from the wall beforehand.

If that doesn't help, first remove the discrete GPU card and try using only the integrated one (mobo display port).

A list of the parts you put in the rig will help. There might be some compatibility issues with the parts.

If there is a reset button or jumper on the motherboard for the bios, use that to get it back to default settings if you can. The manual that came with the motherboard should show you what you need. Also, remove the coin battery, though you may have to do that any way in conjunction with the reset. Maybe even replace that battery.

Hey, man. Just edited the list of specs onto the original posts. I'll go ahead and try that out but I just replaced the battery when I built it so I don't know.
