Core 2 quad q9400 overheating

Hi,
Today i recieved my q9400(used, from aliexpress) as a substitute to the dual core e2180 processor.
I replaced it myself but the processor seems to be overheating. It reached above 80°C, even upto 88° (while i tried to play PES. When idle, it was above 45°.
I applied the thermal paste myself. The fan is a bit old too. Or is it because the processor had been overclocked or so before i received it?
What could be the possible reason?
Can someone please help me...

You really only need about a pea-sized dot to cover the whole CPU after the cooler is applied. Putting on too much paste can actually hurt your cooling performance, but not THAT much. I think it's just a matter of needing a better-than-stock cooler. Which doesn't have to be expensive. $30 or so. Depending on whether or not your case can fit it, the Hyper 212 is the go-to cooler these days.

Hi there.

While upper-80 degree temperatures won't damage the chip, they are definitely too high.

Your motherboard decides what speed to run the CPU at, so any previous overclocking settings don't matter.

Are you using the stock heatsink and fan? Did you apply lots of thermal paste or just a little pea? Is the heatsink making good contact with the CPU?

Yes i am using the same fan and heatsink. Will that be a problem?
I didnt put little or too much of thermal paste. Applied about half in the pack.
It should be in good contact because i had tightened the screws.
