when i drive on gta 5 i lag, going down to min of 10 fps. I have tried turning ingame v-sync off and tried to turn adaptive v-sync on, and so on and so forth. i can not get this game to run smoothly even on the lowest settings (which i should not have to use, i should be able to play at high)

pc specs:
cpu: fx 6300
ram:4gb
gpu: gtx 1050 2gb

Solution

If you want to try and mix it with your current ram try and match the current rams specs(timings, voltage, latency) as close as possible.

Well, it could be that your CPU isn't enough to run the game very well. Your GPU and RAM seem to be sufficient though. You could try updating your GPU's software along with a restart.

Also, try running in Windowed mode, (Press Left ALT + Enter to get out of fullscreen mode).

To be more sure, download msi afterburner and go to settings>monitoring tab and then put Gpu and cpu usage and temps on screen display to make sure that there is no bottleneck or something is going wrong with either. Also while in game, check the RAM usage in task manager.

Ram is the biggest issue I see. 4Gb is not enough for that game to run smoothly. Even at low settings the game can eat 3Gb(higher settings will use more), so that plus the OS and background tasks 4gb will fill up very fast and the system has to use the page file which leads to to the fps drops. Try and shutdown as many background tasks as you can and that should help a little but to fix it I recommend a ram upgrade.

I can tell without a doubt that it is the RAM. I've seen examples of the same thing on my friend's PC when he had 4GB ram and started driving around town,it just starts to stutter and drop frames the more you play and in the end becomes unbearable so i am sure it is the RAM. The only other thing that could lower your FPS is something in the backround or MSAA in game which just kills frames

MSAA eats the most FPS in my case. And also grass quality on ultra is a waste, just put it on very high
Well if you have 1600mhz RAM already just get one more stick of the same one. If you want to get a new one completely i would suggest a hyper x fury 1600mhz ddr3 since i have the same one,but really any RAM as long as it fits in your system
