No recommended resolution for my monitor

I have never had this problem before. I have nothing added or new. But when I moved my setup outside of my room and into the living room, I setup everything normally and switched on my computer to find out the resolution was different and blurry so i tried changing it and realized there was no recommended resolution and anything higher than 1600x1200 comes up with the message "Out of Range !" but still shows what the resolution looks like until it reaches 1920x1200 where it comes up with the "Out of Range !" message but resets it to the last resolution that worked, whether or not it came up with the "Out of Range !" message. I tried everything single resolution that was available except for the ones that actually can't work and all of them are the same, blurry, small text and icons within other apps as well. I do not have another monitor to try anything out but I have tried replacing the hdmi cable, restarting windows 10 and tried using the size slider in display settings, color calibration and ClearType Text. My native resolution is 1024x768 and i have an 19inch LCD Generic Non-PnP Monitor and i have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960.

Resolution: If your monitor has a wide screen aspect ratio (16:9), then it can't be 1600 x 1200. 1600 x 1200 is the old school 4:3 ratio. What is possible is that you've been using a 4:3 non-native ratio on your display this whole time. And now that I think about it, that's precisely what's going on. You or someone setup the monitor to use a 4:3 (box-like) ratio. The resolution normally would appear in the middle of your wide screen display with two black bars on both sides of the image. Therefore someone set the monitor to stretch the sides of the image to fill the entire screen. And now that you've set it up to the proper 1600 x 900 (16:9) ratio, the image which would normally fit, is set to that stretched horizontal width...
Sounds like the refresh rate of your monitor is too high in the Windows display settings for that specific resolution; 1920 x 1200.

Navigate to Windows display settings -> resolution -> advanced settings -> monitor

Underneath the "screen refresh rate" pulldown menu, the option "Hide modes that this monitor cannot display" should be checked. You should also be able to manually change the refresh rate for the pulldown menu.

Hi thanks for the quick response however the screen refresh rate is at it's lowest being 60hz and the "hide modes that this monitor cannot display" box is greyed out.

What is the manufacturer and model number of your display?

Addendum: Check the refresh in the Nvidia control panel as well: display -> change resolution

* Note: You'll also find the model of your monitor on the same page as the refresh rate in the Nvidia control panel.

The text is a lot less blurry however the screen seems streched out sideways with a bit of my desktop background chopped off the icons are smaller than before and the Out Of Range message appears. I definately think it's 1600x900 but when i open apps they strech across the whole screen if not they try to.

I'm not sure. I'm guessing that: (1) The settings on the physical monitor might need to be tweaked. I'd recommend just resetting them to factory, although you would lose your brightness, contrast settings. Or you can just manually tweak the settings from the OSD instead of resetting them. (2) Another possibility is that something is wonky in the drivers, and they should be removed and reinstalled.

You need to go in the monitor On Screen Display, and change that setting. As for the text or icons being small, you should adjust that with Windows settings. I also wonder if this is what's responsible for the out of range error.

That is completely true now that I think about it, however like I stated before I cannot get the OSD to open as it keeps prompting me with the Out of Range message each time I try.
