I have gone through several WiFi adapters and I was wondering if anyone knew a good PCI-E WiFi adapter. It needs to be a very long range dual band adapter. I am far away from my router and i cant move it, I have seen some high gain adapters but lots of them intermittently turn off and they aren't very consistent. I would mostly use it for gaming and video streaming.

Have you tried Powerline over Ethernet? It can be much better at long range. When PoE works properly it is much much more responsive than wireless. You'll know right away if there are wiring issues which affect PoE. Which is a problem for a minority of users. It is definitely a first option to me.

Plus you can get a PoE with built in Wireless. That way you can hardwire your desktop and extend your network to the other end of your house. Just set the SSID, network key and encryption type exactly the same as your router. Then your WiFi devices will just connect to the strongest signal.

If you have a good 4x4 capable router. Just about the best you can do with a PCI-e card would be one with a 4x4 antennae arrangement. With the antennae moved up and away from the case. As that steel chassis does nothing good for reception. A computer case is about as good for passing a WiFi signal as a brick wall.

Still PoE or PoE + WiFi would be my first choice. Besides actually running a CAT 6a Ethernet cable through the walls. Which is what I do.
