I am having issues w/ my current graphic card (running hot). While trying to figure out what may be causing this, I read an article that said the BIOS may need to be updated. I've done a bit of research on this process, but am unsure if I really need to update it or not.

I did perform a search if there was a newer BIOS version for the MB (used the CPU-Z program) and it said there was an update. I checked the AMI site for updates, but only see various options for programs to download, but nothing specific for my MB it self. (are these programs an executable that will just check and update it as needed?)

The current MB I have is a GIGABYTE GA-990FXA-UD3, BIOS is American Megatrends Inc. version F2 (date says 07/15/2013).

I'd really appreciate if anyone could give me direction on what I may need to or take into consideration

Thanks in advance,
CR2008

Unless the BIOS update specifically states it resolves an issue with graphic cards, you should not update the BIOS. In fact, unless a BIOS update does not specifically state it resolves an issue that you are experiencing, then you should not update the BIOS.

All the available versions of your motherboard's BIOS are on this page => http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3894#bios. But you have to know your motherboard's revision and select it at the top of the page, in order to find the correct BIOS. There are rev1, rev.1.1, rev1.2, rev3, rev4, rev4.1. Each motherboard revision uses a different BIOS. The revision number is printed on the corner of your board. Below you see a revision 1.0 board.

As for your GPU running hot, it has nothing to do with your motherboard's BIOS. Assuming the GPU's cooling system is working and doesn't need any maintenance (thermal paste), you should look for a new GPU BIOS. Your GPU has its own different BIOS chip which has nothing to do with the motherboard. If your GPU is a EVGA one with the notorious overheating problems, you'll have to search your GPU's BIOS on its manufacturer site.

I checked the MB and it's a rev 4.0, so I figure that means I would look at that specific tab and select the F2 version.

The graphic card is a Zotac GTX 970. I didn't think about it's own BIOS honestly. I haven't had any issues w/ it till about a week ago when the screened blacked out during gaming (nothing intense, just normal play). I also hadn't considered that the thermal paste may be wearing out. I'll have to check that out and see if one of those may be the issue

Thanks for info

You have to select the rev4.0 and download the latest BIOS which is F3. You already got the F2 version. As for your GPU, you don't need a BIOS update. It just seems that its cooler needs some maintenance. Make sure that the fans are spinning, and do some dust cleaning. If that doesn't help you have to clean the old thermal paste and reapply some new one. Good luck.
