So, my 6770 from February 2012 finally died, I am surprised that it even survived so long.

Not exactly a casual gamer but in my country, gaming can get really expensive.

Bought the 6770 for 7000 rupees (140 USD based on the 2012 exchange rate, the value of 7000 inr has reduced to 100 USD based on the current exchange rate).

Been looking for another similar card at the same budget, unfortunately never found it.

CPU - Intel G3250
Power Supply - Antec VP450P
RAM - 8 GB

Now, because I am desperate, I am just loosening my purse and was deciding between the

1) RX 460 (MSI 2GB) - https://www.theitdepot.com/details-MSI+Radeon+RX+460+2GB+GDDR5+ATI+PCI+E+Graphic+Card+(RX+460+2G+OC)_C45P27520.html

Price - INR 9640 (141 in USD)

2) RX 460 (Sapphire 2GB Dual-Fan) - https://www.theitdepot.com/details-Sapphire+Radeon+RX+460+2GB+GDDR5+OC+ATI+PCI+E+Graphic+Card+(11257-00-41G)_C45P27895.html

Price - INR 9820 (144 in USD)

3) GTX 1050 (ZOTAC NON-MINI 2GB) - No link, because I got the price from a physical store.

Price - INR INR 9600 (141 in USD)

4) GTX 1050 (MSI 2GB) - No link, because I got the price from a physical store.

Price - INR 10100 (148 in USD)

I mostly play old games, which are 75% off on Steam. I am not proud of this but I sometimes play the occasional latest pirated game too which will eventually be bought 2 to 3 years later when on sale.

Not exactly a fanboi, but I prefer AMD because of the awesome experience I have had with the previous card. My last Nvidia card was the 6600 GT (stuff of legends but failed within 3 months and the service center wouldn't replace it, it was an ASUS).

Between the RXes, Reviews have said that the MSI version is both cool and quiet, not much reviews on the Sapphire Dual fan version, I am leaning towards to the Sapphire one though.

The card WILL be used for another 3 years minimum (the full warranty term), 4 years preferably. It is for that reason that I want the RX 460 over the GTX 1050 (Nvidia is rumoured to gimp old cards, also terrible in DX12) unless someone can convince me otherwise.

Why not the RX 470?

Well.. the RX 470 costs

1) Sapphire 4GB Dual fan - INR 16000 (234 USD)
2) MSI ARMOR 4GB - INR 16800 (246 USD)
Wild Card Entry - MSI GTX 1060 3GB - INR 17300 (254 USD)

In the AMD side, the Level One cards cost around 140 USD and Level 2 Cost around 230 USD so is the 90 USD extra worth the performance of the L2 cards? I was planning to get a new card on Monday (16th Jan) but if I am to pick a L2 card, I will have to wait till the 1st or 2nd week of February. While waiting will be tough, I don't mind doing so for an investment that I expect to last at least 3 years.

Also, opinion on the GTX 1050 and GTX 1060 (3GB version), how do they fare against the RXes in their respective level? Willing to switch camp if the GTXes make more sense.

I know my CPU is a HUGE bottleneck, I am definitely upgrading in the next couple of months after exhaustive reviews of AMD Ryzen are released.

Thanks for reading.

PS: I am from India.

Solution
Those 470 cards you list need a 8 pin power plug mate , you only have a 6 pin on your PSU.
It will run the card but you are going to need an adapter cable !

Get the gtx1050 it's better than the rx460 and dx12 won't take of any time soon. Also with that cpu you can pretty much forget playing any new dx12 title without having issues (a lot of games start to refuse to launch on non quad cores).

I would say get the GTX 1050 , but it is a bit too slow for me, unless you get the Ti version. DX12 will be supported on both brands. Don't understand why people say AMD has a leg up in it. What kind of motherboard do you have? Having at least an i3 will help as well.

As Rouge Leader said, the RX 470 will be a beast, as it is better than the 1050 Ti. But the GTX 1050 last for a while.

Thanks for your answers friends.

I got a H81 motherboard. I might upgrade around May if I have the money but I am definitely upgrading Q4 2017.

So, if I am buying a card on Monday, I should pick the GTX 1050 2GB (MSI or ZOTAC?) over the RX 460 2GB.

But if I am willing to wait for another 3 to 4 weeks, the RX 470 is completely worth it? From basic calculations, it performs 2x better than the RX 460 and GTX 1050 while only costing 1.6x over it.

Is my conclusion right?

The 470 is worth the wait, not just because of the greater performance. There are two other reasons it's worth it in your case. One, you want to use it for the next 3 or 4 years. I can't predict the future, except to say 2gb cards will start to struggle soon. The other reason is you are upgrading your computer. For what you have now, a 1050 would be great. Once you have an upgraded system you will wish for more videocard power.

best current choice would be a 1050 yes, it is the much stronger card

a rx 470 would be the best bet however, since you want to keep it for so long ( depending on the resolution you are playing at, it would be a pointless on something super low )

having a h81 mobo means all you need is to update the cpu, no need for a change of motherboard

Going for the Zotac 1050 (gives me a 5 year warranty too).

Kind of disappointed by this.. I know I can get an adapter but I guess this the universe telling me to stick to my budget and get the 1050 or 460.

Thank you very much everyone, I was definitely going for the rx 460 because of all gimping rumors and I am also an AMD fan but I think I will get the 1050 instead after listening to everyone recommend it.

By the way, AMD has Frame Rate Target Control that helps reduce power consumption and heat while playing old games, does Nvidia have a similar feature? Googling only shows a software by EVGA called Precision X and a feature called 'Adaptive Sync'.

Adaptive sync works far better than the amd feature mate.
Enable it in the drivers , enable vsync in the game menu.
It will limit the upper fps to your desktop settings refresh rate & allow drops in increments of 1 fps if it drops lower .

To be fair even the 1050 is a HUGE upgrade over an old 6670 .

In the end, bought the Zotac 1050 Mini, I know I was completely against the Mini version but I think I will build a 4K HTPC. I got a sucky system which I got for temporary purpose after my older computer was destroyed in the floods in December 2015 (was supposed to be for only a couple of months but ended up using it for a year). I will get a totally new latest computer by the end of this year, will re-purpose the current system into a HTPC.

Thank you everyone for your advice.

I am currently posting this from my computer with the new card.

Back to Geforce after 12 years!
