Solution
Having a "caution" on your HDD is never a good sign.
Although it won't fail overnight your HDD has a problem and it will only get worse.
I would recommend buying a new drive and then at least you know that any problems your having is not HDD related.
pretty vague explanation.

1. Fresh Windows install?
2. Was working fine before?
(if so, what changed)
3. What games?
4. EXACTLY what do you mean by lag?

Some tips (if not done):
1. Windows needs to be installed from scratch (if new motherboard socket).
2. test system memory www.memtest86.com (full pass or until errors... use "XMP" setting for memory in BIOS first)

3. NVidia drivers from NVidia site (if new GPU but not motherboard then use DDU to remove old drivers. use "recommended" setting
http://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-driver-uninstaller-download.html

4. Power Settings-> make sure PCIe-> link-state isn't on HIGH (can throttle PCIe bus and thus the graphics card)

5. TEST with benchmarks and other repeatable scenarios.

The easiest way to check if you have all the drivers is to look at the device manager.
If there are no exclamation marks next to any of the hardware components then you should be ok.
I always use DDU when changing graphics cards even when they are the same brand.
I would also update the motherboard to latest bios because it will be optimized for the latest harware.
This thread I found the guy seems to be having the same problem as you

Answer 10 seems to cure the problem by turning the "Shader Cache" off.
